My dad, the hammock and me…

hammock.jpg

I may or may have not mentioned before about my relationship with my dad. I think I may have on my other blog but not on this one. Anyway, on my way back from Asia, I watched a film called ‘Bridge to Terrabithia’. The film was about a boy and his relationship with his dad and his best friend. I have never cried so much on any trip that I can remember. I was a bit sensitive, coming back from my Asia trip as I took the last leg of the trip to be Manila, Philippines. This was where I was born. I had just relived memories of my childhood while waking through the streets where I grew up, and fond memories of childhood came rushing through. I was not as close to my dad as I wanted to be but nonetheless, we had a special bond. Read more

A millionaire in one year? Impossible right? Maybe not…

I remember a management empowerment session that I was asked to attend by our CIO at the time. As I mentioned, I am a Project Manager for our I.T. Department and one of the things we lack in our department was the spirit of team building. So, in light of that – all the project managers were asked to attend this super uber pick-me-up kind of seminar where he had speakers from all over the globe including Rudi Giuliani, Jerry Lewis, and self-proclaimed millionaires to discuss with us how and why they became successful. It was a great seminar filled with inspiring stories.

I forgot one of the speaker’s name but he was a war veteran from the Vietnam war – let’s call him River guy. He came home after being deployed not knowing how the soldiers are looked at back here in the U.S. He tells his story from when he arrived at the airport in full regalia, thinking that he will be looked upon as a hero. Someone walked up to him, spat on his face and ran. The war was so unpopular that even the troops were not looked upon with respect. He became depressed and decided to move away into seculusion. He went to Colorado and became a boatman for tourists on the Colorado River. He grew his hair and beard almost unrecognizable as a previous soldier. Read more

This would have been on my wish list for my birthday…

Why do I want to get this Sony Vaio? I like watching movies. I barely have time to watch movies in a theater these days. Going to school, full-time job, and house chores just takes up all my time. I usually take my downtime,  pour a glass of wine and pop a DVD on my DVD player or BLOG ABOUT LIFE! I can blog all weekend long, sometimes even stay up till 3:00 in the morning writing about STUFF.Â

What would be the most ideal if I can do both using this compact laptop? I can watch movies at the park, my patio or wherever I would like to take that downtime. What more – - just look at the features on this baby:

Masterful Performance in a Compact Body. This full-functioning Sony VAIO UX230P UMPC features a 4.5″ wide SVGA screen, Intel® CoreT Solo Ultra Low Voltage CPU and Microsoft® XP Professional operating system. Wireless freedom is yours with integrated wireless LAN, wireless WAN and Bluetooth® technology built right in. Expansion is a breeze with the port replicator; you can even opt to add an optional Bluetooth® GPS receiver and turn your Sony VAIO UX230P UMPC into a portable navigation assistant.

What else can you ask for? I actually found a site where you not only bid on this item to get it, but whoever has the lowest bid wins? How good is that? There are lots of items listed that your head will probably spin trying to figure out which one you would like to own. I love gadgets and let me tell you – - there are plenty to choose from. Go visit the site and let me know what you think! I will be watching for this item – since it still has 14 days remaining and see if I can win it. Maybe my downtime will be more efficient – - and much more fun!!

Do you have a credit card? Try shopping at SM MALL of ASIA – Manila

As you all know, I am travelling in Asia at the moment. I had the worst experience sa SM Mall of Asia. THE WORST experience using my credit card. I specifically called my credit card prior to leaving the U.S. in order to make sure that they wouldn’t think that my card is being compromised as I will be travelling in 5 different cities in Asia. This includes Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, and the Philippines. The credit cards that I was going to use have been properly notified and both of them have been very accommodating to say the least. I notified two credit cards I intended to use during my trip to make sure that I can separate my business expense versus my personal expense. Read more

Hey Graduates! Are you ready to pay that loan?

A friend of ours recently graduated from Arts Institute of Philadelphia.  As you may or may not know, he graduated with honors (wink, wink).  He had excelled in his major because this is what he dreamt would be his patch to success.  His field of study?  Interior Design.

Well, you all know that as young individuals, we are sometimes asked what we’d like to be when we grow up.  He was asked that same question but in Filipino culture, either you take up medicine or law school to get your folks’ support or nothing else.  Well, he didn’t get that support because he wanted to take up interior design.

Recently, he decided to fulfill his dreams and went into Interior Design.  Without the financial backing, he had to apply for student loans to cover his expenses.  Graduating last year, he is faced with starting to pay up his student loans.  He has a few of them and believe me, taking up Interior Design is not cheap.  Read more

To date or not to date… is it too soon?

Geez!! I really am not very good at this but since my breakup, I guess I have to get out there again and be available in the market! This is the part that I hated because I really don’t know how to date. If you’re Pinoy, you go on the courtship chuvalais, give the flowers, write some love notes, and voila – yes or no, then you either become a couple or you don’t.

Here in the US is quite different. First, it’s hard to meet people unless you go to a party every weekend and go out to a club every night! It’s not even practical to do that. I wonder if I should try Online Dating? With Online Dating, I can pick and choose. I am able to name the place (public is best) and then see how it goes from there.

I looked around and as inexperienced as I am with Online Dating, I figured people already went through this stuff and know what to do and how to do it to work for me. I came across http://www.onlinedatingtips.org/, a place to find TIPS and TRICKS to get back into the dating world. They rate the Online Dating sites with ToP dating sites and recommend other services that you may use in the process.

I really liked the Dating Tips section. With online dating comes the dangers as well. I reviewed their “Watch out for Red Flags” section and it was amazing although it really is just common sense. Looking for signs must be a priority though and I liked that they made it a priority.

I am still not ready but if ever I do, I think I’ll go visit the site before I get back into the game. ???

Criminal raps filed vs Borgy over bar brawl

Charges of serious physical injuries were filed Wednesday against model and television host Fernando Martin “Borgy” Manotoc before the Taguig Prosecutor’s Office, radio station dzBB reported.

borgy_manotoc.jpg

Complainant Carlo Pardo de Tavera Brown, accompanied by his mother Mara, also filed perjury charges against Marjorie Palabrica, lady guard of The Embassy bar in The Fort, Taguig City.

The complaint stemmed from the April 9 mauling incident in front of The Embassy bar, which resulted to the hospitalization of Carlo.

Carlo is the grandson of former Social Welfare Mita Pardo de Tavera, while Manotoc is the grandson of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos and son of Ilocos Norte Rep. Imee Marcos.

Manotoc showed up at the Taguig police headquarters on April 11 to give his side on the incident. He claimed that he acted in self-defense during the brawl.

“I’m sorry that people were hurt by this foolish incident and I hope that we can all learn from this and hopefully move on,” he said.

The De Taveras, however, did not believe that Manotoc was indeed apologetic. They said Manotoc never said any names and merely mentioned regret over the “incident.”

Making Money Work For You Volume 1, Article II – Loans

I think it’s time to talk money again. You must already know me when it comes to making my money work for me. I have written about this before and it is filed under Making Money Work For You category.

When I purchased my home back in 2000, the interest rates were not as low as it has been in the past few years. I believe my interest rate back then was 8.1% which if considered today – it would be ridiculously high. No one would touch an 8.1% home loan today.

After a couple of years, the interest rates have gone down considerably and I had high balance credit cards that carried an interest rate as high as 16%. I considered refinancing my home to a 15 year mortgage and since the equity of my home has considerably increased, and there was no sense for me to continue paying my credit card at such crazy interest rates when I can refinance my home. I was able to refinance my home plus an additional cash out to pay off high interest credit cards and incorporate them into my home loan and be able to pay down my loan faster than the original 30-year home loan that I originally took out. What was the benefit? Read more

Popular on YouTube? You may soon get a profit cut – Happy Slip is sure to bank on this one..

YOUTUBERS TO BE PAID: The most popular contributors to YouTube will be rewarded for their efforts with a share of advertising revenue, Reuters reports (link), based on YouTube’s blog entry. The lucky ones include Lonelygirl15, LisaNova, renetto, HappySlip, smosh and valsartdiary.

Google’s YouTube is now ready to cut some video makers in on the action.

The shared revenue will come from advertising money generated in connection with individual contributors’ videos, the company announced in its blog Thursday.

But the policy won’t extend to everyone.

Unlike video-sharing site Revver, which shares its advertising revenue with all of its contributors, YouTube’s partnership deal is strictly for contributors that YouTube feels are significant and draw a crowd–in other words, the popular kids.

Among the chosen partners are Lonelygirl15, LisaNova, renetto, HappySlip, smosh, valsartdiary and others who have garnered YouTube celebrity status.

The new arrangement has been in the works for some time. In January, YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley said the video-sharing site was making plans to compensate video creators. A big question at the time was how YouTube would incorporate advertising with the user-generated videos.

“We’re going to continue evaluate the program….Part of the reason the program is limited is to help us ensure that our advertisers are comfortable with content their advertising is adjacent to,” Jamie Byrne, head of product marketing for YouTube, said in an e-mail.

“Because they have built and sustained large, persistent audiences through the creation of engaging videos, their content has become attractive for advertisers, which has helped them earn the opportunity to participate on YouTube as a partner,” the company blog said. Read more

This is major CHEEZMAX! And I was torn if I should blog it or not..

Have you ever wondered details about someone you’ve known for a long time? Your best friend for example? When we consider someone to be a BFF, we tend to know everything about that person right? You know his/her favorite food, weaknesses, likes, source of income etc. How about your boyfriend or your girlfriend? Do you know everything about them? You would probably say – - I know most of the things about them but probably not 100% because everyone has to keep a secret.

Well listen to this – - – COME CLOSER….

I remember watching 20/20 or 60 minutes where they featured a man who traveled the globe and had wives everywhere. None of the wives knew that the man had other wives. He pretended to be a lawyer to one, a doctor to the other, and a pilot to the next, etc. This story inspired the movie ‘Catch Me If You Can’ starring Leonardo Dicaprio. It seems way too much and we would say that those women are stupid.

Well, I came across a real life ‘Catch Me If You Can’ drama right in my neighborhood!!! I have known this couple (let’s call them Rostum and Keanna) for about four years now. They have a beautiful home, fully renovated inside, complete with a ‘car wash’ like shower in the marble-laden bathroom, upscale kitchen and furniture imported from Italy.

I would say that they have been together for almost 10 years yet they recently tied the knot a couple of years ago. Rostum is a doctor and Keanna is a nurse practitioner. Their wedding was upscale as well — horse and carriage royalty chuva! I say that they have lots of cash – - imagine a doctor and a nurse practitioner? Hmmm .. that’s great income right there!

I have befriended this couple. They even came to my birthday party and I am constantly talking to them about our dog (they have Shih Tzus too!) and sometimes they would even invite me and my friends for cocktails at their home. Very nice couple indeed. They are always together and they show us pictures of their ski trips, vacation here and there. A happy couple… or so it seemed. Read more

Oprah Winfrey Rocks!! Hands Down!!!

oprah_letterman.JPG

You all know that!! Yes, I love Oprah Winfrey and I am not ashamed to admit it. She has been an inspiration to me – - a philanthropist, a media mogul, rags-to-riches story, what ever else.. I LOVE HER.

I have heard about the feud between her and David Letterman for years. I watch the Oprah (taped every day by my BF – - love him too!!) show every day but since going back to school, I haven’t had the chance to see the show.

Well – I was browsing vids on Youtube and I found this classic video from last year uploaded by nightflight82 (thanks very much by the way!!) . Oprah finally guests on Letterman and wow – - – it is sooo entertaining. She talks about the alleged feud, Tom Cruise, her mission, The Color Purple she produced for Broadway.. blah blah blah..

I have all three videos containing the whole segment on Letter man here.. let’s watch. Read more

I am really not new to blogging. I started my blog way back in October of 2005. The blog is called ‘Where is the Station?‘ I was inspired by a blogger that I found on the internet. His name is Heath Dieckert. I read his entries, and his posts hit home. I, too, liked the books he liked, had the vision he had, and always trying to find ways to make myself better. He admired the same authors I did. It brought me back to basics. Read more
