Do not chastise Malu Fernandez, she was definitely joking.

I was blog hopping the other night and found the article “From Boracay to Greece” by Malu Fernandez that infuritated Filipino bloggers worldwide, most especially the OFW’s whom she insulted on her write-up. I was affected by it as well and although I am not an OFW, I have very close friends who are. To say the least, I was a bit annoyed. Hate would be too big to use because she did, and I’m sure of it – mean it as a joke.

Why am I certain of that? I’m an 80s kid and you all certainly remember Donya Buding. A comedienne by art, her character to be a rich, famous, and elite Donya was hilarious and very entertaining. She used the poor to create her persona. She would make fun of the have-nots and I found it very funny!! Actually, a lot of people did!! I used to wait for her ’skit’ on ‘Penthouse Live’ every Sunday evening and laugh my arse off! To tell you the truth, if I was reading Malu’s article under a different pretense, I would probably be on the floor hyperventilating in laughter.

What is the difference between the two? Nothing. They both stated their statements to be funny. The only thing that separates them is that Donya Buding is/was a comedienne – - Malu Fernandez, on the other hand is not although she may have thought that she is. The damage has been done and Malu Fernandez like Ruffa Gutierrez, or O.J. Simpson will move on and go on with their lives. I also understand that she has apologized and tendered her resignation (still awaiting confirmation).

I am gay, and gay jokes can be harsh. If you’ve hung out with gay guys and hear the way we insult (in jest) other people – you will probably send us all packing as well! We say these things to be funny and we laugh about it when it is funny. And don’t get me wrong because I understand what happened fully. It’s like Malu made a joke about a gay person dying of AIDS, and to me – that is not funny. But it was a joke and I may be annoyed at first but I am willing to let it go. Just don’t do it again and we’ll be fine. I am not being self-righteous here.. just stating what I would do if I’m offended by something.

So come on guys – - let it go. She made a mistake, she apologized. This is not a witch hunt. Let’s welcome her back and let this be for her, a GREAT lesson learned.

An excellent movie that I recommend for this is “PRIEST“. The movie  climaxed at the end wherein through the silence of both victims (the priest and the girl), they understood each other’s pain.  Very moving – - – rent it this weekend!

Cheers everyone!!

major laugh attack ako jan sa donya buding mo….hahahahha

masyado ng maraming publicity ang idinulot ng babaitang ito. enuff is enuff. sabi nga nila:

LET BYGON BE BYGON!! ~ as in, insecticide?

  2. chuva says:

ha-ha!! rememberetch mo pa ba si donya buding? i remember watching her with apo hiking society sa carnegie hall sa new york.. and she was mocking the pinoys that go to canal street to shop for fake Louis Vuitton bags, Bolex (rolex) etc.

Bwahahahahaha – - BYGON BE BYGON ATENG!!! isprey natin silang lahat!!!

I think this article offended our OFW’s. The manner in the way she speaked is not right. She did not respect our domestic helpers. She sounds like a rich girl but from the way she talks she sounded like an immature brat who didn’t study anything. She treats filipinos like a can of sardines, that’s not right. If she’s that rich she shouldn’t have taken the economy class and took the first class.

  4. mel says:

well i agree with you chuva. yeah i got pissed that moment i heard that story but it doesn’t mean that i should be rebuking her for a very long time for writing what she felt/experienced. many people misinterpret her straightforward attitude for being such a diva. and for me she’s just being herself.

i know it’s very offensive on the OFW’s part but she apologized for what she said. everybody should indeed move on. receiving death threats and hundreds and hundreds of hate mails everyday would probably be enough consequence of what she did. plus she has resigned from her 2 jobs- which i believe she truly loves. i guess i’d just kill myself if i would do that.

  7. marbs says:

For me this article really offended are OFW’s. It is not right to say such things.I know that there salary is not that high but she did not have the right to tease are OFW’s. Is she really educated?! She treats filipinos like a bunch of animals. If i was her id be really ashamed for doing that. I wish you already learned your lesson…..

  8. tal says:

ay nako chuva! i just had to comment on this article. i agree with seselya. we shouldn’t have a grudge on her for too long because everything was just her opinion on the OFWs. She has the right to say those things but what happened was she went way too far! nasobrahan eh. medyo bastos na. maybe for her it’s sarcasm but i didn’t see any of it. if i was one of the OFWs, i would have punched her right on the nose. :) ) but anyway, i think she made her point because it looks like she really wanted to let it all out. good for her though because there’s nothing bothering her anymore. in the case of the OFWs, they should just move on and forget about this article. they shouldn’t let their lives get ruined because of one person or many more like her.

  9. That didn’t sound like a joke to me. It sounds like a nagging wannabe. A social climbing wannabe. Who the heck does she think she is a princess? I am not an OFW. I actually grew up in Canada, but I know where I came from.
I understand if the byatch was maarte. She has every right to be. As I was reading her words, I pictured her to be an intelligent woman, more like a UP grad type very educated. I just wished she would use her talent to make Filipinos look good in the eyes of other nations. Instead she would put filipinos down so that she can let everyone know that she is not one of them or us. After I saw her picture I could visually tell that she’s a misserable older woman who gets off on putting people down to feel good about herself. Yeah, I know the type. but Whatever!

  10. If you think only OFW was offended well think again.

    Best response ever.

FIRST OF ALL, How nouveau riche can one get? Did you marry rich? Did you suddenly come in to money? Your blatant displays of your ‘luxuries’ and ‘wealth’ and your comfort with using the word ‘elitist’ to describe yourself alongside the fact that you had to reference to ‘politicians in your family’ show that even if you did come from money, you certainly have no class.

You also seem to need to name-drop in every article that you write.

It really gets to me that you should complain about the coach seats on your Emirates flight. Honey, they aint small… YOU’RE FAT. Spare yourself some doughnuts and maybe your travels will be more comfortable. .. coach, or not.

MOST IMPORTANTLY. The fact that you would put down OFW’s (Overseas Filipino Workers) is really DISGUSTING. It makes you sound more vile than what you described as the scent of their ‘AXE and Charlie cologne’ while your ‘Jo Malone melted into thin air’. Honey, without that perfume, you want to know what you smell like? Like a fat Filipino woman. The smell is probably more putrid than the smell of those OFW’s. Cause they sweat honest, hard-working sweat. The kind of sweat that keeps the Filipino economy going. They’re f****** brave. They’ve seen more than you, felt more than you, and fought more than you. You’re just a coddled fat Filipino woman, under all of that cologne, and that branded clothing that makes you feel more important than them.

It sounds to me like you get to fly Business Class when you travel for work, but when you had to pay for your own travels, coach was more affordable. You tried to hide this by grandiose references to you perfume and your designer wear, didn’t you? Tsk tsk…

You made some mention of having 17kg’s of make-up in your hand-carry. All the make-up and adornments in the world can’t hide how ugly you are inside. You aint that good-looking either, hon. Go to the gym, eat some fruits. You wrote that you wanted to slit your wrists because you were stuck in coach with all the OFW’s. I am MOVED every time I am on a flight with OFW’s. I am reminded of their resilience. Of how hard they work, and how they keep the Philippines going. The economy relies on their bravery. You should have slit your wrists, hon. And you are going to hell if you don’t change the way you think. Think of sitting in coach, imagining your personal hell as a personal foreshadowing.

I have lived in the Philippines, and I have also traveled the world. I’ve probably been to as many – if not more places than you. I have maybe seen more things than you, so maybe despite all of this money you seem to need to brandish and the places you have been to, you’re just an ignorant. This coming from a 20 year old girl.

Your act isn’t classy. You’re not pretentious. You’re just some stupid woman, living in a third world country, thinking that because you jetted off to Greece and you wear Jo Malone perfume, you suddenly are someone.

Take this from a person with the same ’socio-economic background’ as you, b**ch. What a pitiful excuse.

I also happen to read things ‘thicker than magazines’, I go to University in London where I will finish with an Honors Bachelors Degree in May. I have a 1 year Marketing Economics degree from a business school in Oslo, and I graduated with an International Baccalaureate Diploma at age 17, if you were wondering. So no f****** excuses.

You could do so much more than you think, yet you choose to act like a proper twat. The kind of twat that people with some brains laugh at, the world over. The kind of people that write for things ‘thicker than magazines’. Think of this as some more exposure.

I am ashamed of people like you.

OFW’S all over the world, working their tits off, deserve a public apology.

  12. Hi Chuva

Sensya ka na I got carried away.
I actually just read the articles today and
someone found Ingrid’s post and posted it to our forum.
Of course I had to add my 2 cents in.

Gusto ba nating ma-stereo typed ng ibang lahi.
Di ba sabi ng mga magulang natin galangin natin sila sa harap ng tao para galangin din sila ng ibang tao.

I guess it goes the same for our race.
kung gusto nating irespeto ng ibang nation
the we should respect one another first.

    like I said before, Whatever!

  13. johny says:

Hmmm, I suspect you’d also condone people calling African-Americans the n-word if they find it funny as well. So this is just a bunch of laughs for you… “Call me whatever you like but when you are trapped in economy class that is filled to the brim with migrant workers the smell gets a little funky after nine hours of flying.”

I think my comment is a bit late but what the heck! It is easy to forgive than to forget! I think this Malu Fernandez think highly of herself obviously! A lot of us have been to several countries and places but never brag about it nor make any derogatory comment about the Filipinos we met regardless of their status in the community/society. Malu F is a classless inconsiderate person! May she never find a job as a writer or anywhere. For me she deserved all the nasty comments about her. I hope she will her lesson well or else there are a lot of us here abroad who will go after her fat ass!

  15. Great site! Would like to follow this one. Looking forward to more posts from you.
