‘Idol’ rigodon

Ryan Cayabyab, the new headmaster of Pinoy Dream Academy

MANILA, Philippines – It’s a game of musical chairs for stars of the first season of “Philippine Idol.”

On the same day that Top Three finalist Jan Nieto was launched as the newest cast member of GMA 7’s “SOP,” “Idol” judge Pilita Corrales was given a tribute on ABS-CBN’s “ASAP.”

It was announced that Pilita was joining the cast of the Kapamilya show “Lovespell: Cindy Rella.”

An ABS-CBN insider later informed Inquirer Entertainment that “Idol” main judge Ryan Cayabyab was about to “sign the dotted line as the new headmaster of ‘Pinoy Dream Academy.’”

The source said Mr. C had long been meeting with PDA director Laurenti Dyogi, and that it had been decided that he (Cayabyab) would handle the music curriculum of Star Magic, the network’s talent management arm, on top of his new PDA job.

It’s a homecoming of sorts for him. “Ryan, Ryan Musikahan” was aired by ABS-CBN in the late 1980s through the early ‘90s.

The other Ryan on “Idol,” host Ryan Agoncillo, would also be joining PDA, according to another source.

Long wait

For Jan, it was a long wait—nine and a half months of languishing in uncertainty.

“I got depressed once or twice because I wasn’t doing anything,” he told Inquirer.

The ABC 5 reality contest wrapped up last December. A month later, fellow Top Three finalist Gian Magdangal was already a regular on GMA 7’s Sunday noontime variety show “SOP.”

Jan, on the other hand, had much earlier quit his job as customer marketing manager in the manufacturing firm Unilever.

“My friends and I used to mark our calendars. One Sunday, I’d be on ‘SOP’—I really wished it,” Jan recalled.

On Oct. 14, his wish was granted.

On top of “SOP,” he’s also working on his debut album, under Sony-BMG.
