“Cosmopolitan” Hunks and the changes they want in 2008

cosmo_hunks.JPG

Four “Cosmopolitan” bachelors are part of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) this year. They are Dingdong Dantes (Resiklo), Alfred Vargas (Banal), Paolo Paraiso (Banal), and Dennis Trillo (Shake, Rattle, and Roll 9).Last Monday, December 24, these four hunks were all present at the MMFF Parade of Stars at the Quirino Grandstand, Roxas Boulevard, Manila. PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) grabbed the opportunity to ask them about their plans for New Year’s eve and the change sthey want to happen in 2008.

Dindong Dantes said he wanted to be more organized with his things. “Probably start cleaning up my room, throwing the trash that shouldn’t be there.” The supporting actor of Resiklo also added that he might go to the beach this coming new year “to think.”

For 2008, Dingdong is hoping for a better project after Marimar, which is set to end by March.

In the meantime, Alfred Vargas of Banal said he wants to have “better and more efficient time management.”

Christopher de Leon: “I’m still in the game.”

christopher_de_leon.jpg

In 1974, the country first witnessed the extraordinary talent of then 18-year-old Christopher de Leon in the Lino Brocka film Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang. Christopher, or Boyet, won his first-ever FAMAS award for his performance as an innocent young man seeing harsh realities in his barrio.Countless other films followed. The actor broadened his expertise by venturing into directing. Now, he is seen in ABS-CBN’s Maging Sino Ka Man Book 2, where his intensity in portraying his character leaves the viewers awestruck.

To welcome the New Year, Boyet hits the big screen with Banal, an action-drama movie about a SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team that uncovers a conspiracy to assassinate the Pope. Calling it his dream role, Boyet plays Major Sagala, a SWAT trainer who grills the team that  guards the Pope’s life when he visits the Philippines.

In an interview with The Buzz yesterday, December 30, Boyet shared his experiences about his career and his latest movie. After all, this is his 122nd movie in his 30 years in showbiz.

The Buzz’s Cristy Fermin commented on how young-looking Boyet is despite the fact that his eldest son, Ian de Leon, is already in his thirties.

Ruffa Gutierrez wants to leave all the pains of 2007 behind

ruffa_gutierrez1.JPG

The Buzz co-host Ruffa Guttierez took the spotlight yesterday, December 30, concerning her controversial breakup with Turkish husband Yilmaz Bektas. With this issue that Ruffa is facing, is it still possible for them to make amends and get back together again? Or will Ruffa start the New Year as a single person?”My relationship now with Yilmaz is very complicated,” Ruffa explained. “May mga times na nag-aaway kami at nagsisigawan kami, may mga times na nag-iiyakan kami. So, wala pa ring closure kami ni Yilmaz.”

Ruffa’s co-host Boy Abunda asked: “What was that relationship like?”

“Siyempre, nag-uusap kami ni Yilmaz dahil may mga anak kami,” she said. “Siguro kung wala kaming anak, e, hindi na dapat kami mag-usap. Because every time we talk, it’s emotional. Sana lahat ng pains na nangyari this 2007, e, sana maiwan this 2008. I don’t want to bring any negative vibes this 2008.”

Ara Mina stops taping “Bubble Gang” when she appears in “Prinsesa ng Banyera”

aramina3.JPG

Is it really goodbye for Ara Mina in GMA Network?

Sunshine Cruz on reported marital issues: “Pls bear with me if I choose not to talk.”

cesar_montano.JPG

Cesar Montano and Sunshine Cruz were a picture of marital bliss during the second birthday of their daughter, Angel Francesca, at the Le Salon ballroom of Hyatt Hotel and Casino in Manila, last December 1.

On Christmas day, the couple reportedly had a heated argument over Cesar’s alleged affair with 16-year-old half-Filipina, half-Brazilian model Mariana del Rio. Reports claimed that Sunshine, along with their three daughters, left their Quezon City home.

And two days before new year, the marriage of Buboy and Shine, according to sources, is on the rocks. Sunshine’s manager Alfie Lorenzo, in his Startalk interview yesterday, December 29, revealed: “Noong isang araw nga, tumawag sa akin si Sunshine. Sabi niya, ‘Tito, hiwalay na kami ni Buboy.’ Ganoon. ‘Tapos, sabi ko, ‘Ano’ng nangyari?’ Sabi niya, ‘Lumayas ako kasama ng mga bata.’”

Cesar denied the separation but admitted the spat. He said in his text message to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) Editor-in-Chief Jo-Ann Q. Maglipon yesterday, December 29: “This is 1 of shines childish reactions on things..somebody jst txtd her n poisond her mind.she overreactd n speculated wildly.”

Carlene Aguilar on Dennis Trillo: “My son doesn’t deserve a dad like him.”

dennis_trillo2.JPG

“Napanood ko both versions. I saw the original, pinapanood sa akin the one starring Tita Susan [Roces] and the one starring [Lorna Toelentino]. This is very different in a sense na napalawak yung story.”

Dennis Trillo and Carlene Aguilar at odds during the Holidays

dennis_trillo.JPG

It seems the Holiday season has no good effect on former sweethearts Dennis Trillo and Carlene Aguilar, who are now only linked by their love child, Calix Andreas.

Dennis and Carlene went on air in StarTalk yesterday, December 29, and said contrasting statements about their present relationship.

Carlene was the first to be interviewed through phone patch by hosts Butch Francisco and Lolit Solis.

“Masaya! Masaya! Kakaibang saya kasi our entire family, including that of my grandparents both from my mother and father side po… Sobrang saya kasi si Calix at three months, alam niya na kung saan haharap, kung sa camera,” Carlene happily said about the first Christmas of her son, Calix Andreas.

It’s not easy being green, but if you join me it would be.

What would you do to help save the world if we are facing a disaster in the near future? What if the things that you do everyday helps push the earth to the edge of that disaster? Would you continue what you are doing or would you take steps to prevent it.

People have talked about global warming for a while now, has it taken hold in your mind yet that it is true? Would you recycle plastics and bottles even if your neighborhood doesn’t support it? Would you take the extra mile to plant trees to help the gas exchange in your part of the world? What would you do?

There are many simple steps we can take and if you’re willing, let’s work on it together. Simple daily practices can amount to a lot if 1 million people do it. If I say that I will not use non-biodegradable products even if I have to pay a little more – - would you do it? What would you sacrifice for the sake of being green?

It doesn’t take that much and we still have time. Let’s work together and save the earth from disaster.

Ruffa Gutierrez says her weight loss is not because of zero lovelife

ruffa_gutierrez.JPG

So, everything combined, kaya ako pumayat.”

So, you know me naman. Ruffa has already been known as a gay icon and I love gays, they’re all my friends. You know, I’d rather hang out with gays. But for a partner, I would rather be with a man.”

Hey Hey Chicago…here we come!

I cannot imagine driving straight for 15 hours but we did it. We left Southern New Jersey at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, the 28th of December and arrived in Chicago at 9:30 a.m.  local time the next day. It was a feat I thought I would never do but it was fun. The ride was excruciatingly boring though because there really wasn’t anything throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio all through Indiana and since we’re driving in the middle of the night, there wasn’t much anything to see. I am just glad we made it safely here.

The reason why we drove? Well, my Interior designer friend moved to Chicago because of job opportunities here. Yes, I am still in Chicago and blogging from here. He left his car back in South Jersey thinking that living downtown would not require him to drive but he found the job located outside of the city so he is now going to need his car. How ironic huh?  I helped him drive his car over here and he is flying me back for free!!

I am here right now in the middle of his first apartment ever (he’s never been on his own before Chicago). It’s a studio apartment, spacious and floors laid in hard wood. The only thing that bothers me in his apartment are the footsteps of people above him and I’m sure our footsteps bother the people below us. I told him that he should get Oriental Rugs to cover the floors. Not only does it add style and grace to his apartment but it also serves as a safety net between him and his neighbors downstairs!! ;) Neighbor spats can get ugly sometimes.

Seriously though, I can’t think of anything else to lay down on his beautiful hard wood floors but Area Rugs that can protect not only the hard wood but provide a certain ambiance and comfort in his apartment. Right now it looks so bare and uncomfortable.  He is insisting though that I get him the cowhide rug. He is an interior designer so I’m sure he can see the design before I can.

Rugs come in many different types, shapes, color so I guess it depends on what he thinks will fit best on his studio apartment. If I was him, I would still opt for Oriental Rugs but it’s probably not his style. I guess we will be shopping for rugs this weekend!

New Year, New Resolution, New Me…

It’s almost time.  Before we know it, we will be ringing in the New Year – 2008!  What do you have in mind?  Have you created your list yet?  My year 2007 was filled with ups and downs, including my break-up with my boyfriend which really shouldn’t have happened but it did. The loss of my beloved, Simba was devastating as well to say the least. But, I also accomplished a few such as getting my Associates Degree, traveling to Asia, and my trip to Italy with my ex.

But there are new things on the horizon. There are many things we can hope for the next year. Staying positive and keeping a winning attitude can get us places. Who knows? Maybe I’m in for a new romance in 2008. We’ll just have to find out.

So on that note, here’s my list:

  1. Quit smoking
  2. Sleep early on weeknights
  3. Be on time for work every day
  4. Excercise three times a week
  5. Eat healthy
  6. Get organized
  7. Visit my family more
  8. Get A’s on my classes
  9. Save more money

I didn’t list anything that I though would be impossible.  I only listed the ones that I know I can accomplish.  Although I can’t control how romance would play a role in the year 2008, I am not discounting it either.

We have a lot of room for improvement. All we have to do is create a list and work on the list piece-by-piece. I cannot look at the whole list because overwhelming myself will only result in failure. I will work on one item until I scratch every single one off.

Are you ready for 2008? Make that list!!

“Magpakailanman” airs its last original episode tonight

As 2007 ends, so does Magpakailanman.

November 2002 nagsimula ang telecast ng true-to-life drama anthology ng GMA-7 hosted by Ms. Mel Tiangco. Monday telecast pa ito noon, although ibinabalita nang magiging pantapat sa long-running drama anthology ng ABS-CBN na Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK) hosted by Ms. Charo Santos-Concio being telecast on Thursday night.

Three episodes noon ang sunud-sunod na nai-tape para pagpilian kung ano ang magiging pilot episode, ang Didith Reyes story portrayed by Ara Mina, the Aeta law student story portrayed by Jolina Magdangal, and the septuagenarian high school student portrayed by Mr. Eddie Garcia. In the end, ang Didith Reyes episode ang naging pilot episode ng Magpakailanman.

By the middle of the second season, itinapat na ang Magpakailanman, with the story of a singing jailbird portrayed by Dina Bonnevie, sa Maaalala Mo Kaya.

Studs welcomes back Lance Onate, bids Kevin Santos goodbye

Natuloy na rin ang launching ng Studs kagabi, December 26, with one welcome and one goodbye.

GMA Artist Center together with Noel Ferrer formed a boy-band group na tinawag nilang Studs. It is composed of StarStruck graduates Mike Tan, Dion Ignacio, and Kevin Santos; Star In A Million 2 finalist Lance Oñate; Mr. Pogi 2006 Edgar Allan Guzman; and former Star Magic talents Felix Roco and JC Cuadrado.

Nang magkaroon ng out-of-the-country commitment si Lance, when he joined the workshop for an Asian version of the Latino group of the ‘80s na Menudo, he was not replaced but an addition was made—sexy actor Coco Martin, who was introduced in the critically-acclaimed film Masahista.

Bukod sa pagkanta nila—mostly sa Regal Films and GMA Films movies na walang theme songs, like My Kuya’s Wedding and Ouija—at mga mall tours to practice their singing, Stud’s launching project was a 2008 calendar in cooperation with X Ray magazine.

November unang naiplanong mai-launch ang calendar but was rescheduled ng December. On the night of the launch, November 29, nagkaroon naman ng curfew owing to the failed coup attempt of Senator Antonio Trillanes and the Magdalo group.

Last night, December 26, the Studs—the group and the calendar—was finally launched at Zirkoh Timog.

Nakasama ng group si Lance who was back from Malaysia, but unannounced naman ang biglang goodbye ni Kevin, citing scheduling problems. My Only Love and the upcoming Joaquin Burdado.

Cristine Reyes very visible in the company of Willie Revillame

At least Willie is aware that he cannot have a relationship with anyone right now until his marriage with Liz Almoro is annulled. Although, falling in love doesn’t require annulment of a previous marriage, I am just glad he has that sense to avoid the already high-profile scandals plaguing him. Just carry on until the decision and you will be fine.

- Chuva Chienes

But before this incident, nakita rin sina Willie at Cristine na magka-holding hands sa Guam.

Read more

Marian Rivera shows her comic side in “Desperadas”

I am beginning to like Marian Rivera a lot.  I mean a lot!  Not because she is on every magazine and every write up but she really is a good actress.  She’s beautiful and great at her own ‘teleserye’, Marimar.  Now, she proves to be a comic too!!  I want to see “Desperadas” now.  I’m sure after the film fest, I will be collecting the best films on DVD.  I just have to wait.

- Chuva Chienes

“Kailangan kong mag-shift ng characters every now and then,” sabi ni Marian. “Sa Marimar kasi, serious ako parati. For the past few months, doing the role of Marimar, lagi akong umiiyak at emote nang emote.

“It’s a personal thing kasi.

“Tulad nga ng sinabi ni Iza, I want to get to know her better din. Siguro kung magkakasama kami sa isang project ulit, doon na mangyayari ‘yon,” sabi ni Marian.

Jennylyn Mercado vehemently denies throwing tantrums in public

Funny how rumors fly when you’re not under the radar huh?  Jennylyn has been receiving a lot of good publicity lately that they just have to knock her down.  The business of show business!!  Can’t live with it, can’t live without it.

- Chuva Chienes

HM January 2008 cover girl Jennylyn Mercado reportedly got into an argument with boyfriend Patrick Garcia. The said argument was so intense that Jennylyn, in a fit of temper, rushed to the street and lied down.

This was just another rumor Jennylyn would normally shrug off. But, with news about people actually believing the rumor, she could not help but air her side in frustration.

“Sorry, pero ang cheap talaga ng issue na ‘yon,” said Jennylyn in an interview with Chika Minute aired yesterday, December 26. “Puwede naman kaming mag-away sa loob ng bahay. Pero sa labas? That’s sad!”

Jennylyn also explained that she didn’t have any major arguments with Patrick, so the rumor about her lying down on the middle of the road was nothing but pure fiction. When asked about what Patrick’s reaction was, she said, “Hindi pa niya naririnig, e. Tatawa lang yun, I’m sure.”

On a lighter note, Jennylyn excitedly said that she has started taping for her first Sine Novela for GMA-7 titled Maging Aking Ka Lamang with Patrick. However, Jennylyn expressed some worries because it is, after all, her first soap opera with Patrick as leading man.

Part II: Showbiz Shockers of the Year

5. ANGEL LOCSIN FLIES FROM KAPUSO NETWORK

Angel Locsin used to be one of GMA-7’s most prized talents. In four straight years, she became a staple in primetime TV viewing with Mulawin (2005), Darna (2005), Majika (2006), and Asian Treasures (2007).

Aside from her television projects, she also hit the big screen with movies like Let the Love Begin (2005), I Will Always Love You (2006), and The Promise (2007). The young actress grew with GMA-7.

So imagine the reaction of the people when she suddenly decided to leave the network that nurtured her. It was an explosion!

The Impact. The Kapuso supporters went livid. They dubbed her, “dark angel,” “walang utang na loob,” “ingrata,” and other sordid names.

Initially, her reason for leaving GMA-7 was “burnout.” Some insiders attributed it to dissatisfaction with her talent fee. Others said ABS-CBN tripled the amount of what she was getting from the Kapuso network.

In her interview with The Buzz last August 12, Angel put things this way, “Hindi na po ako masaya. Importante po sa akin yung tiwala. Napakaimportante sa akin nun… at nawala ‘yon, e. Nung bago ako umalis [papuntang U.S.] habang wala ako, ngayong dumating na ako, nawala ‘yon [tiwala].

“Lahat naman tayo gusto ng growth, di ba? Yung growth ko, nandito [sa ABS-CBN]. Karapatan ko naman siguro na mamili kung ano ‘yung gusto ko, kung ano ‘yung makakabuti sa akin. Basta wala akong nilalabag na batas. Nagtatrabaho lang po ako.”

But GMA-7 was hurt. The talent, whom they nurtured and who was offered the biggest projects, left them without properly bidding goodbye. Worst, when GMA-7’s top management confronted Angel and her manager Becky Aguila in a formal meeting last July 3 at the Makati Shangri-la, both denied sending feelers to ABS-CBN.

Speaking on behalf of Kapuso network was its Senior Vice-president for Entertainment Wilma Galvante, she revealed, “Nababalitaan namin, marami kaming naririnig na nakikipag-usap na kayo sa kabila. Totoo ba ‘yan? ‘Tapos ang sagot ni Becky, ‘Saan mo narinig ‘yan? Sinong nagsabi sa ‘yo niyan? Hindi ‘yan totoo. Walang katotohanan diyan.’

“And Angel even said, ‘Naku, hindi po ako lilipat. Mahal na mahal ko po kayo hindi ko kayo iiwan. Gusto ko lang magpahinga. Gusto ko lang magbakasyon. Pagbalik na pagbalik ko, kayo naman ‘yung una kong kakausapin.”

But in a presscon held on August 3, Becky admitted sending feelers to ABS-CBN.

“A grateful person would have negotiated with us in good faith and treated us fairly, and with honesty, basic honesty. She and her manager unfortunately did not,” was the statement issued by Ms. Wilma.

Angel’s transfer also took its toll on the other talents of Becky. After the sine novela Sinasamba Kita (May 2007) with GMA-7, Valerie Concepcion also moved to Channel 2 and is now one of the co-hosts of Willie Revillame’s noontime show, Wowowee.

Charee Pineda, who became part of the cast of Impostora (June 2007), was seen in ABS-CBN mini-series Love Spell.

Ella Cruz, the younger Marimar and one of the Super Twins (February 2007), is now part of ABS-CBN. She will soon portray the television remake of Anna Liza. Bakekang’s Charming, Eunice Lagunsad, is currently part of the TV series, Princess Sarah and the children’s gag show, Goin’ Bulilit.

Jennylyn Mercado, first female winner of GMA-7’s StarStruck, is the lone talent of Becky who’s still a Kapuso. Shortly after the hullabaloo, Jen’s visibility on TV was affected.

“At first I refused to believe… First week ko dito, galing ako ng States, pag-uwi ko mayroon akong schedule for a week. After that, sabi ko, ‘Everyday naka-cancel lahat ng schedules ko. Parang oo, totoo na yata ito.’ Tapos nung nagpahinga ako ng one month and a half na walang work, sabi ko, ‘Oo nga, naapektuhan talaga,’” was Jennylyn’s sentiment.

Fast forward, it seems that both sides, GMA-7 and Angel, have moved on.

Hot Topic Meter. The shocking issue lasted for three months. And now, people are waiting to see how high Angel would soar as a Kapamilya celebrity.

4. Kapuso vs Kapamilya vs AGB Nielsen

For the past 15 years, AGB Nielsen Media Research Philippines (previously known as Nielsen Media Research) has been providing the Philippine broadcast and advertising industry with TV ratings that serve as advertising clients’ source of TV trends and movements. The company has been using a “reliable, independent, and transparent audience measurement system” to provide television audience measurement (TAM) data to the public.

On November 20, 2007, however, ABS-CBN called the attention of AGB Nielsen regarding unethical practices in Bacolod, Negros Occidental.

The Kapamilya Network was alarmed when a man went to their Bacolod office to narrate how his group was being paid by a certain “network” to scout, then identify, the sample households and bribe the members to deliberately switch channels in favor of the unnamed network. The hired group allegedly offered a P500 bribe or grocery items to the households. Tampering of data would be the end result of this practice.

Hence, ABS-CBN filed a P63-million civil case against AGB Nielsen for damages and injunction, and applied for a temporary restraining order from the court last December 14.

In defense of AGB Nielsen, Ms. Maya Reforma, general research manager of the firm, issued a statement on December 19:

“We initiated an investigation and informed the industry and all stakeholders that certain panel homes had been contacted by representatives of parties being linked to GMA-7. This was done by AGB Nielsen to secure the cooperation of the industry to improve self-regulatory guidelines for promotional campaigns of this nature and to ensure the transparency of the investigation process.

“AGB Nielsen is confident that its system has been able to thwart any attempts at distorting the data, and is prepared to defend the integrity of its ratings data before the courts.”

On that same day, an article was published in PEP, which stated that GMA-7 is “aware” of alleged bribery of panel homes in Bacolod. As proof, the content of a letter from AGB Nielsen general manager Maya Reforma addressed to Ms. Sheila Tan, vice-president for research of GMA Network, Inc., was shown to the public. In the letter dated December 3, AGB informed the Kapuso Network that “certain activities being conducted by your company in Visayas have led to some of our panel homes being contacted by your employees or representatives.”

The research group asked GMA-7 to answer six key questions that would help facilitate the ongoing investigation regarding the anomaly in the Visayas region. The existence of this letter showed that GMA-7 had been aware of the anomalous activities for some time.

On December 20, the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 80 issued a temporary restraining order asking AGB Nielsen to refrain from releasing television ratings data to the public for 20 days. However, the firm apparently defied the TRO and released the overnight ratings for December 18 and 19 on December 21.

ABS-CBN then asked the court to indict AGB Nielsen for contempt. The Lopez-owned network named AGB Nielsen, its board of directors, and General Manager Maya Reforma as respondents in the petition.

GMA-7 joined the fray when a reporter from ABS-CBN-owned radio station DZMM tagged the Kapuso Network as the mastermind behind the bribing operation. In the December 19 report of Junrie Hidalgo, he stated: “AGB Nielsen umamin sa dayaan. GMA network tahasang itinurong nasa likod ng dayaan.”

GMA-7 executives pointed out that they had been asking AGB Nielsen about the disparity of cable and non-cable ratings of GMA programs for the past four years. GMA’s December 19 official statement states: “It is only in the Philippines that the ratings of programs on non-cable or free TV households exhibit a very different behavior from the cable households. Coincidentally, the Philippines is the only country in the world where a competing free-to-air TV station also operates or controls the dominant cable company. The owners of ABS-CBN directly or indirectly operate the country’s largest cable company.”

The Kapuso network organized its own emergency presscon on December 20 and announced the plan to file a libel case against “Junrie [Hidalgo], of course, and whoever is connected.”

Ms. Rikki Escudero, GMA Head of Regional TV and AVP for Expansion and Production Services, pointed out: “We don’t even have a [TV] station in Bacolod. All we have there is a radio station. For several years, we have not been very active in the production areas. Ngayon lang kami muli nagpapapakilala, introducing ourselves.”

Ms. Escudero also pointed out that it is very easy for anyone to introduce themselves as GMA-7 employees. They will need strong evidence to determine whether or not the informants from Bacolod are indeed telling the truth.

Last December 26, ABS-CBN formally filed its complaint for contempt against AGB Nielsen. AGB’s legal counsel Atty. Rivera had argued that the TRO only covered Bacolod City and not the whole country.

The Impact. The discovery of irregularities in the ratings data gathering process is snowballing into one of the most talked-about controversies involving Kapamilya and Kapuso fans. The anomaly is also questioning the integrity of an international research company that has been the main source of TV ratings data for the past 15 years. It is hard to predict how this saga will end but one thing is for sure, the conclusion will change the way TV ratings are gathered in the Philippine setting.

Hot Topic Meter. The issue is not hot, it’s blazing. Anything that has to do with the network war is big news, as it has always been coupled with fierce statements and comments from the staunch supporters of ABS-CBN and GMA-7.

If you say anything against ABS-CBN, the Kapamilya reacts. If you speak ill of GMA-7, the Kapuso retaliates. The topic is no longer on who’s doing things right; the intent of these fans is simply to defend their favored TV station.
3. GRETCHEN BARRETTO-JOHN ESTRADA KISSCANDAL

On June 8, two pictures circulated on the Internet-one, a guy and a lady were cuddling for the camera; two, they were kissing.

Kissing couples in showbiz are no big deal, but not when the two people happened to be Gretchen Barretto and John Estrada. The pictures were taken using John’s Nokia N95 phone, and during the birthday party of Rufa Mae Quinto last May 27.

Both the camps of John and Gretchen kept mum at first. But their silence only fueled speculation. Were they having an affair? How would Tonyboy Cojuangco, the partner of Gretchen for 13 years, react? Who leaked the photos?

John, who normally keeps quiet whenever he has issues, was the first to come out with a statement on June 13. He apologized to Gretchen and her family and he took responsibility for the leakage of the photos.

Four days later, Gretchen said her piece through her manager Boy Abunda: “I have gone in one in a state of humility and surrender and I ask the public please pardon my ways. The only way out of this unchained is through it. I certainly am grieving my mistake.”

The Impact. The “Kisscandal” changed La Greta. The controversy magnet Gretchen lessened her visibility in showbiz and focused on the people that matter to her: her family.

“I really can’t tell kung anong level. I just know na parang nauntog talaga ako nang malakas! Marami akong na-realize, marami akong natutunan, marami akong gustong baguhin, and I know I need a lot of growing up to do… ” she said in her interview with PEP last July 25.

The scandal dragged some people into the circle of controversy. First, there was Rufa Mae Quinto. She evaded questions about the incident at her house by talking instead about her rocky relationship with singer Erik Santos. They would later break up.

High society raised eyebrows over the kisscandal. Tonyboy’s mother, Imelda Ongsiako-Cojuangco reportedly asked her son to leave Gretchen. But Tonyboy vowed he would never leave his family. Gretchen has a long-standing rift with the Cojuangco matriarch.

On a separate note, the Barretto sisters closed ranks. The three had been feuding. But Claudine and Marjorie gave their support to their sister through text messages and phone calls during the whole ordeal. Gretchen was teary-eyed during The Buzz interview last August 19. She realized that when “one is really in trouble, kahit masama ang loob mo sa tao, sa kapatid mo, it’s automatic… it’s love, it’s blood.”

Hot Topic Meter. People just love talking about what she says or does. She’s not a full-time celebrity, but she figured in a lot of showbiz controversies this year. She’s carefree, candid, and truthful-qualities that endear her to the public.

2. RUFFA AND YILMAZ: SHOCKING SPLIT

Ruffa lived as a wife and mother in Istanbul, away from the limelight. Every time she would visit the country, she was a picture of marital bliss. She would often talk about her lovey dovey and her two adorable daughters Lorin and Venice.

On the morning of May 8, an announcement roused the Pinoys from sleep: “It is with much regret that RUFFA GUTIERREZ and YILMAZ BEKTAS announce their mutual decision to end their four years of marriage.” That was also the start of more shocking revelations, heated exchanges between Ruffa and Yilmaz, and the revival of Ruffa’s career.

The Impact. The initial news was just the tip of the iceberg.

Shocker Number 1: Yilmaz blamed Ruffa’s showbiz career for their separation. She had extended her stay here when she accepted the hosting gig offered by Solar Entertainment for Philippines’ Next Top Model last March.

Shocker Number 2: Ruffa revealed that she was a battered wife. “Lahat ginagawa niya. Sinasaktan niya ako, binubugbog niya ako, pinutol lahat ng buhok ko, sinisipa ako, kinukulong ako sa cabinet, bine-belt niya ako, lahat!”

Shocker Number 3: Yilmaz severed ties with the Gutierrezes, particularly with matriarch Annabelle Rama. In an interview, the feisty mom said, “Leave my daughter alone.”

Shocker Number 4: Ruffa admitted an earlier marriage to a certain Richard Daloia in Las Vegas.

Shocker Number 5: At the height of angry exchanges, Yilmaz called Ruffa “Brutus” (traitor) and Annabelle called columnist Dolly Anne Carvajal “Bruhilda.”

The life of the couple became an open book—from the time they announced their breakup to Ruffa’s revelation about having been battered, to Yilmaz’s s sudden arrival to visit his daughters last August.

Looking at the bright side, Ruffa didn’t have to work hard for her showbiz comeback. The open controversy led to a contract with ABS-CBN and movie projects under Regal Films, one of which will be shown on January 1, the Desperadas. Ruffa is presently the TV host of The Buzz.

Hot Topic Meter. We were all taken aback by the split announcement, and got even more shocked by the statements that ensued from both camps. Things seem back to normal for now, but expect a commotion once Yilmaz and Ruffa come face to face again.

1. KRIS-JAMES-HOPE SAGA

Arguably, the biggest story this year was the alleged sexual affair of basketball superstar James Yap with Belo Medical Clinic receptionist Hope Centeno.

Although Hope is not a celebrity, the mere fact that she got involved with James was a big deal. James is the husband of Kris Aquino, one of the most popular celebrities in Philippine showbiz, and whose personality has always been as colorful as her lovelife. Once again, the daughter of former president Cory Aquino was caught in a scandal that became a national issue.

The Impact. The controversy, which happened shortly after Kris’s birthday, caused her great emotional turmoil and nearly ended the marriage.

Shocker Number 1. What made the rumored affair complicated was that Kris was pregnant with her and James’s first child. In an interview, Kris Aquino said, “Patas ang laban sana. Kaya kong lumaban, kaya kong humarap, kung wala akong dinadala, but I am pregnant.”

Shocker Number 2: The scandal strained the friendship of Kris with Dr. Vicki Belo, who owns the beauty clinic where the supposed illicit affair took place. Hope Centeno vividly described the details of her sexual affair with James.

Shocker Number 3: The issue compelled the TV host to lie low in showbiz. Kris gave up her hosting jobs in The Buzz and Game KNB?

Since then, the people have moved on with their lives. James and Kris chose to work on their marriage. Kris has become less visible in showbiz, making family life her priority. She remains highly visible as a commercial endorser though.

Kris withdrew as one of Belo’s top endorsers, and is now the face of Facial Care Center, one of Belo’s competitors. But it’s business as usual for the Belo Medical group. On Vicki Belo’s broken friendship with Kris, Vicki said: “We need time to heal.”

Hot Topic Meter. Kris Aquino is Kris Aquino. Whatever she says candidly or does (recklessly in the past), whatever controversy comes her way, matters a lot to the public.

Other issues that almost made it to our Top 10 List—the sudden split of Aiko Melendez and Martin Jickain, Marjorie Barretto and Dennis Padilla. The two couples already filed for annulment.

There’s Yuri Park and her revelation that she is the mom of Mark Lapid’s baby. The two are also in the process of divorce.

Let’s also note the election results last May—many celebrity candidates did not fare well. Voters apparently favored experience over popularity this time.

Indeed, showbiz is full of surprises. We never know what’s next, like a talenovela or movie that keeps rolling, and we sit with bated breath on the edge of our seats.

Benazir Bhutto

Benazir Bhutto was born in Karachi, Pakistan to a prominent political family. At age 16 she left her homeland to study at Harvard’s Radcliffe College. After completing her undergraduate degree at Radcliffe she studied at England’s Oxford University, where she was awarded a second degree in 1977.
Later that year she returned to Pakistan where her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, had been elected prime minister, but days after her arrival, the military seized power and her father was imprisoned. In 1979 he was hanged by the military government of General Zia Ul Haq.

Bhutto herself was also arrested many times over the following years, and was detained for three years before being permitted to leave the country in 1984. She settled in London, but along with her two brothers, she founded an underground organization to resist the military dictatorship. When her brother died in 1985, she returned to Pakistan for his burial, and was again arrested for participating in anti-government rallies.

She returned to London after her release, and martial law was lifted in Pakistan at the end of the year. Anti-Zia demonstrations resumed and Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan in April 1986. The public response to her return was tumultuous, and she publicly called for the resignation of Zia Ul Haq, whose government had executed her father.

She was elected co-chairwoman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) along with her mother, and when free elections were finally held in 1988, she herself became Prime Minister. At 35, she was one of the youngest chief executives in the world, and the first woman to serve as prime minister in an Islamic country.
Only two years into her first term, President Ghulam Ishaq Khan dismissed Bhutto from office. She initiated an anti-corruption campaign, and in 1993 was re-elected as Prime Minister. While in office, she brought electricity to the countryside and built schools all over the country. She made hunger, housing and health care her top priorities, and looked forward to continuing to modernize Pakistan.

At the same time, Bhutto faced constant opposition from the Islamic fundamentalist movement. Her brother Mir Murtaza, who had been estranged from Benazir since their father’s death, returned from abroad and leveled charges of corruption at Benazir’s husband, Asif Ali Zardari. Mir Murtaza died when his bodyguard became involved in a gunfight with police in Karachi. The Pakistani public was shocked by this turn of events and PPP supporters were divided over the charges against Zardari.

In 1996 President Leghari of Pakistan dismissed Benazir Bhutto from office, alleging mismanagement, and dissolved the National Assembly. A Bhutto re-election bid failed in 1997, and the next elected government, headed by the more conservative Nawaz Sharif, was overthrown by the military. Bhutto’s husband was imprisoned, and once again, she was forced to leave her homeland. For nine years, she and her children lived in exile in London, where she continued to advocate the restoration of democracy in Pakistan. In the autumn of 2007, in the face of death threats from radical Islamists, and the hostility of the government, she returned to her native country.

Although she was greeted by enthusiastic crowds, within hours of her arrival, her motorcade was attacked by a suicide bomber. She survived this first assassination attempt, although more than 100 bystanders died in the attack. With national elections scheduled for January 2008, her Pakistan People’s Party was poised for a victory that would make Bhutto prime minister once again. Only a few weeks before the election, the extremists struck again. After a campaign rally in Rawalpindi, a gunman fired at her car, fatally wounding her. The assassin then detonated a bomb, killing himself and a number of bystanders. Bhutto was rushed to the hospital, but soon succumbed to her wounds. In the wake of her death, rioting erupted throughout the country. The loss of the country’s most popular democratic leader has plunged Pakistan into turmoil, intensifying the dangerous instability of a nuclear-armed nation in a highly volatile region.

Just happy to play music for a living

taylor_hicks.JPG

MANILA, Philippines—As a child of divorced parents, recent Manila visitor Taylor Hicks found solace in music. He fell hard for black artists; getting to watch them in concert convinced him that he should follow their lead.

For 10 years, Hicks toiled as a professional singer, making the rounds of bars and clubs (even parties) around the southeastern states, including those near his hometown, Alabama.

Though he wasn’t signed to any label, he already had two albums—“In Your Time” and “Under the Radar”—both self-produced, prior to his self-titled major label (Arista/Sony BMG) debut which came after he became the 2006 American Idol.

Despite worldwide attention following his triumph, Hicks remains grounded and doesn’t mind being referred to as the oldest or least likely-looking Idol. What he’s most proud of, simply, is being a musician.

How did your parents’ divorce affect you?

Any child who goes through a divorce has to find a happy place. For me, music was that happy place. It became my passion and outlet for my feelings.

Marian Rivera refuses to talk about her rumored lovelife

marian_rivera3.JPG

Marian Rivera went home to Cavite yesterday, December 25, to celebrate Christmas with her mother and grandmother.

In connection with her homecoming, the Marimar lead star was asked by “Chika Minute” shown yesterday, December 25, whether Ervic Vijandre—the non-showbiz guy being linked to her and identified in the January 2008 issue of YES! magazine—would be her special guest for Christmas.

But Marian answered evasively, “Si Ervic? Di ko alam kasi, di ba, kapag Christmas, di mo naman mapipigilan ang pumupunta sa bahay mo?”

The young actress also asked GMA News reporter Lhar Santiago not to delve too much on Ervic or her lovelife. She said, “Basta masaya po ako. Huwag na po nating pag-usapan.”

GMA-7 will pursue libel case despite fingerpointing between AGB and ABS-CBN

abs-cbn_lawsuit4.JPG

The Kapuso network will continue its plan to file a lawsuit against the Kapamilya network in connection with the alleged claim of DZMM reporter Junrie Hidalgo that GMA-7 was behind the “cheating scam” of AGB Nielsen’s ratings in Bacolod.

DZMM and ABS-CBN later claimed that the information about GMA-7’s involvement came from Maya Reforma, general manager of AGB Nielsen Media Research Philippines. AGB’s lawyer Atty. Rivera, however, denied the DZMM report, saying that their investigation was still underway and that there was insufficient evidence to prove actual cheating in Bacolod.

Parade of Stars launches 33rd Metro Manila Film Festival

 parade.JPG

The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2007 officially began yesterday, December 24, with the traditional Parade of Stars from Pasay City to Manila.

Unlike last year, the organizers chose a much shorter route for the parade to save time and to avoid unnecessary hassle, especially for motorists, many of whom were last-minute Yuletide shoppers and those traveling back to their respective provinces.

“We want to give everyone, like the celebrities and everyone involved in this, enough time to rest and prepare for the Christmas festivity tonight,” explained one of the organizers.

“Last year kasi medyo mahaba ‘yong ruta and nagkaroon ng mga problema, particularly sa traffic, kaya gabi na talaga natapos.”

KEEPING TRADITION ALIVE. According to Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Bayani Fernando, who also serves as the MMFF committee chairman, the Metro Manila Film Festival is a highly important event because it shows that the local film industry is “very much” thriving despite the problems that continue to plague the industry.

FHM cover girl Jennylyn Mercado now more confident with her sexy body

jennylyn_mercado2.JPG

I guess sometimes we just need a bit of exposure to feel confident.  Jennylyn I think, has a great body. Culturally though, it isn’t the norm for women to be displaying their bodies.  That seems to be changing now too!  What is the world turning into?!  ;)

- Chuva Chienes

“Ngayon kasi, I feel more confident. Mas babaeng-babae ako ngayon! Girl na girl na talaga ang feeling ko!” bulalas ni Jennylyn.

Pero marami ang nakapansin na tahimik lang ang boyfriend niyang si Patrick Garcia at tila hindi ito kumportable sa suot ni Jen sa cover ng FHM. Ayon naman kay Jen, wala naman daw problema kay Patrick ang pagsuot niya ng mga sexy na damit.

“Anak ng Kumander” director cuts Valerie Concepcion’s kissing scene with Pacman

valeriec.JPG

Well, I believe that it was a good act on the director’s part to take out the scene that is causing much controversy.  Someone hailed as a hero like Pacman needs to have his reputation away from controversies.  He is due to fight again and the last thing he needs is bad publicity.

- Chuva Chienes

In fact, nagbibiruan pa nga raw sila ni Manny before and after makunan ang eksena.
