An animated Filipino Film full of promise – URDUJA!

chuvachienes on Uncategorized

I saw this video on Youtube and I thought – Wow! We’ve come a long way baby! Filipinos have many many legends and tales that could be beautifully displayed through animation. My favourite one is “Ibong Adarna ( Adarna Bird )”, however our film industry in the Philippines haven’t threaded much into animation and I believe it’s time. Honestly, I am impressed with the presentation of the film. It’s a great start and I believe, with its success – we will be on our way. This is a way to kick off the creativeness of Filipinos in animation. I remember reading Filipinas Magazine back in the ’90s and I believe one of the top animators at Disney is Filipino. We can do it guys.. let’s get it on!!

The voice of top Pinoy celebrities were hired to complete the film. Regine Velasquez stars as Urduja, Cesar Montano as Lim Hang, Johnny Delgado as Wang, Eddie Garcia as Lakanpati, Allan K. and Michael V. as Tarsir and Kukut respectively.

According to Wikipedia:

Urduja (ca. 1350 C.E – 1400 C.E.), is a legendary warrior-princess who is recognized as a heroine in Pangasinan. A historical reference to Urduja can be found in the travel account of Ibn Battuta (1304 – possibly 1368 or 1377 C.E.), a Muslim traveler from Morocco. Ibn Battuta described Urduja as the ruler of Kaylukari in the land of Tawalisi. Ibn Battuta stopped by Tawalisi, which is believed to be around the Pangasinan coastal town of Sual, on his way to China. Princess Urduja was described as a daughter of a king named Tawalisi of a land that was also called Tawalisi. The ruler of Tawalisi, according to Ibn Battuta, possessed many ships and was a rival of China, which was then ruled by a Mongol dynasty. Ibn Battuta sailed for 17 days to reach China from the land of Tawalisi.

  1. I watched Urduja. Animation is great. The only thing I don’t like is the story. It is very typical and made it look like a corny love story in Filipino.
