Daybreak – An Indie film that looks very promising

coco_martin_paolo_rivero.JPG

A new film coming out in February 2008 called Daybreak. Coco Martin and Paolo Rivero (comes from a list of Filipino Hunks) stars in this ala 24th Day (gay-themed film starring the X-Men, Underwold hunk Scott Speedman)(2004) mixed with Brokeback Mountain (gay-themed film starring the late Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal).

The film shows only these two characters and their conversation during one night together to talk about their relationship, their courage and love for each other. The conversation hone in on their true emotions for each other.

I am very thrilled that a Filipino filmmaker will try and tackle a story based on a story that occurs overnight based only on these two characters, William and JP. It is refreshing to know that Filipinos as artists are jumping in and trying their hands at different levels of movie-making. The preview is quite enough for me to know that this could end up to be a great film. I am expecting this film to be an entry to the Philadelphia Gay and Lesbian Film Festival this year.

Indie films, particularly gay-themed movies are coming out (pun not intended) left and right these days. I wonder what’s the reason; has it become really profitable, or has production become really easy with all the technology available?

In any case, I must say that the art direction, story, script and acting are immensely improving but I still have to see a film of this genre that will be brave enough not to use sex scenes to market and draw an audience. Or is there one already?

Anyway, that’s it for my random thoughts, I wish all the best for all independent Pinoy movie makers. (Ako kaya, kelan magkakaroon ng time na mag-produce ng sarili kong indie film? Hehehe.)

Hey Fitz! You know why? You are absolutely correct. Profits from gay-themed films have gone through the roof! Not only in the theaters but on sale of DVDs as well.

I remember when I went home last May, I bought about 10 different gay-themed films produced in the Philippines. And more and more films are being created. The success of Brokeback Mountain didn’t hurt either.

There are quite a few with sex scenes but I know what you mean. They are not daring enough yet. The Board of Censors might still have their fangs. And besides, it’s a Catholic Country. You’ll never know what the church will do. They could ban it.
