Looking to try something new?

I had always considered Maryland to be my home away from home. I loved living there. I lived there from 1986 to 1988, left and went back from 1990 to 1995. I had to come home due to my mom becoming ill and I wanted to be close to her.

The satellite office that my company had there was the best satellite office if you asked me. It’s not because of the location, but because of the people. I got along with all of them and we always hung out. Every Friday during the summer, there will be an afternoon ‘frosty run’ (similar to your mocha shake today), and then after work we would all go to the local bowling alley, play some bowling and drink ourselves to death. The people that I worked with were all young, fresh off college, trying-to-make-it-in-the-real- world type of people and we had a blast!

After nights of drinking it got pretty boring. We decided to try something new. Mind you, I don’t usually do rough sports, or even any sport for that matter but this was something I couldn’t pass up. They thought paintball would be a game to play during one hot summer day. I really wanted to try it and since I was not ‘out’, I had to be able to hang out with ‘THE GUYS’.

To make the long story short, I obliged because girls from our office were willing to play the game too! Paintball is a game where teams play against each other. Each of the team members were given paintball guns and taken into the middle of the woods and let them go at it with each other.

We arrive there, and what do you know? The opposing team were guys from the MILITARY. They were in fatigues and combat boots, complete with camouflage branches with leaves on them. What the??? ;) These are military-trained guys and the only difference was they were going to use paintball guns instead of real ones. Jeezawhiz!!! I wanted to back out right then and there but it was too late. I had to face it.

So off we went into the woods. Each team are separated and there are huge trees and barracks created for us to use for hiding in case they find you. A whistle blows, and off we started. I was so afraid to even look out from the barracks knowing these guys are probably sharp-shooters that could hit me anywhere in my body. The only thing that they provided were vests and goggles. I was thinking, ‘I don’t care, it’s still going to hurt!’

One by one, the guys get shot – including me – right in the forehead. Who was left? This one girl who is our administrator (and a meek one at that!). The best part of it all was watching her defend our station as you see these guys in fatigue everywhere, on the side, crawling on the ground, with the others running towards our station.

She let out one big scream and picked up her paintball gun started shooting at them and everywhere like mad! She gave it her all while the rest of us laid on the floor, laughing our behinds off! That was such a great experience and we all loved it! After that, we went back to drinking. ;) I’m telling you, if you need to try something new – - try paintball.
