Should you do it? In the information age, online dating makes sense but with precaution. Conventional online dating sites are for the most part tantamount to online shopping. The simple reason is profiles/photos must be searchable by other members, and thus the requirement to surrender control of sensitive personal information. You don't mention this aspect, but it goes to what I disdain most about online dating and why I believe millions of people just refuse to do it (only 40% of single adults have visited online dating sites.) I can only speculate as to where you fall on the risk, saftety, privacy continuum but that shapes how you approach your dating strategy.

Have you considered private online dating as an alternative? It is the combination of social networking and online dating, but most importantly with privacy woven throughout.

Why not take “six degrees of separation” and apply the idea to dating? A recent Temple University study revealed “63% of married couples met through a network of friends.” Our loved ones instinctively want to help us find companionship. If it can help discover your soul mate, why not let friends and family play matchmaker?

Sparkbliss (http://www.sparkbliss.com) is the best example of the “private online dating” revolution and works like this: each member develops a private network of trusted friends and families who can view his/her profile and make romantic introductions on their behalf. Members have complete control over who they invite into their private network.

If nothing else online dating will give you lots of crazy stories and a chance to meet lots of knuckleheads. But, if you want skip the drama then why not date with a reference and/or testimonial from someone you know and trust?

Going on a date is not all wrong unless it is very fair and supportive and is in favourable conditions. Dating in a friendly state must always be prefarable.
