Macy’s is spreading holiday cheers! In memory of an 8-year old girl named Virginia O’ Hanlon, an editorial on the New York Sun appeared on September 21, 1897 in response to her question: “Is there a Santa Claus?”
The letter still exists today (and was appraised on the popular TV show, Antiques Roadshow back in 1998 for $50,000.00 (pictured above). You can read more about the story here.
Because of this, Macy’s is offering a $10.00 offering to anyone named Virginia until December 11th. An animated film will also be shown as a 2009 Christmas Special.
