Projects.

I am a PM if you must know. We build web applications for the Supply Chain & Logistics industry. I am not very technical but I do have some knowledge about code and databases.

We have a very high profile project right now and there is quite an issue with the performance of the application. We have tried all kinds of resolution but we haven’t quite gotten there yet. We have a suspicion that it is due to the poor database design. Needless to say, I think that we would need some
mysql optimization but I don’t think we have someone in the team with the right skill set.

As the PM, I am inclined to search for someone who is a mysql expert but I have to get the budget approved first. I don’t know if it will be the solution to our performance problems but it will be worth the try.

Don’t get me wrong. I have a strong team and I think we have done the best that we could possibly do to deliver a great product but we cannot go into production with something that is so slow to access because if we do, it would turn our customers off and probably not use the tool.

I also thought about hiring someone temporarily and look for mysql consulting companies to help us out. But it still boils down to one thing – budget.

It is probably a surprise to many of you that I am a PM and that I deal with high profile projects. I guess that doesn’t come through thru my blog writing skills. I am more analytical than anything else. Most of my friends are developers but none of them are mysql experts.

I know that we will resolve this before we go live in a couple of months. It just seems to be taking forever because we have to get through UAT first. And if performance don’t improve, we will be left with a product we have been developing for over a year with no return on our investment.

Any suggestions?
