My trip to Brazil is quite timely now that they have approved gay marriage on a national scale.
If only the United States of America would make the same move. It will be a celebration of sorts when I get there since I am reuniting with an old friend of mine. He’s been to the US before (twice) and want to visit more states other than Florida next time. I told him that he could stay with me for free – all he’s gotta worry about is his airfare.
Now, we have more reason to celebrate. As beautiful as the country is, this news simply made a beautiful country with beautiful people all the more attractive for me to consider retiring there. It is a dream of mine to retire in Brazil. One day, it will probably come true.
According to ENCA:
BRAZIL – A top judicial panel cleared the way for same-sex marriage in Brazil on Tuesday, ruling that gay couples could not be denied marriage licenses.
The National Council of Justice, which oversees the Brazilian judicial system and is headed by the chief justice of the Supreme Court, said government offices that issue marriage licenses had no standing to reject gay couples.
The Supreme Court “affirmed that the expression of homosexuality and homosexual affection cannot serve as a basis for discriminatory treatment, which has no support in the Constitution,” said Chief Justice Joaquim Barbosa on the council’s website, referring to a 2011 ruling by the top court.
Barbosa also said there was no reason for the government’s marriage licensing offices to wait for the Brazilian Congress to pass a law authorising same-sex marriage.
Lawmakers are currently considering a bill that would legalise gay marriage.
The council’s decisions are subject to appeal before the Supreme Court.
