Remitly.com vs. Xoom.com – Who wins?

First off, I am not getting paid by Remitly.com to blog about this.  I am doing this simply because I found a great alternative in sending money to my relatives in the Philippines.  And that medium is Remitly.com.  Why then would I use Remitly.com if I could use Xoom.com?

There was a time back in 2007 when I was raving about Xoom.com.  Yes.  I used Xoom.com to send money regularly to my nephew who was going to school at that time.  Xoom.com charged me 3.00 and that was great!  However, after my nephew finished school, I stopped using Xoom.com for a while.  A couple of months later, I was trying to send money through them, and my money kept getting returned to me.  When I called, I was told that there was a glitch in their system several months ago where they were not able to collect from my bank, the money they sent on my behalf.  I thought that was pretty odd because I would have noticed that the money was not deducted from my account.  They kept telling me that I have to pay them the 200.00 USD they sent to my nephew but never collected from my bank.  I told them that I have no recollection of such occurrence and for them to prove it to me.  All of a sudden, I was banned from using Xoom by Xoom.  Not a fault of my own but their system glitch and I was punished for it.  That was not good business!

Since then, I have been using Western Union and I could send money without fees.  But, they need a ton of information and a lot of verification before you can send money successfully.  Which I think is good in a way but a hassle in the beginning.

Now, I have discovered Remitly.com.  They also have a choice of sending money for free if you use the basic service.  If you’re not in a hurry, you will be able to send money and the recipient will get it in five days.  If you’re in a rush, pay $3.99 USD and you’re set.

I am going to try them now, and if all goes well, I may use the service regularly.  They have better rates than Xoom.com and they also have a hotline 24/7 days of the week.  And guess what?  They speak Tagalog too!

For your first transaction, you also get a gift.  a 10.00 USD credit applicable towards the money you will save.  In my case, I have 20.00 USD because I have recommended a friend to use it as well.  If you send $100.00 now, you will receive a $30.00 Amazon Gift Card (Updated July 14,2015 – NOTE: Valid for senders to the Philippines only)  – Use this link: http://remit.ly/1mIR5OK

If you’re sending money to India,  you may want to take avail of the offer to receive up to $40.00 in Gift Cards

Here is a frank review of Remitly. Although most of my friends recommended Xoom for convenience and reliability, I did my own research– checked all the services/transaction charges, security/privacy, etc and went for Remitly. It is backed by Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, so definitely trustworthy! The website is clean and unambiguous, instructions for adding account and personal details are simple and they have iOS/Android apps for all subsequent transactions. Since March 2015, I have used it about 6 times and have got very good service and glitch free transfers all those many times. They have an express exchange rate, and a basic exchange rate, both of which are locked in rates. Basic rate is higher and takes about 3 days, but if 3 days time is not a concern, it’s exchange rate is about 30 paise (0.30 Rs) higher than Xoom per USD. Every transaction above $1000 has no separate transaction charge and you get email notifications at every step, from the time of debit from your account to credit into target account in India. I didn’t have to submit any documents on first sign-up, and after that, transactions are basically just 1-click away. Enter amount, review and send. Simple as that! You can sign up with this referral link to get $30 sign up bonus/Amazon gift card:
    “REMOVED”

    Hope this helps.

  2. Well, I signed up with Shrikant’s referral code, and discovered that only he benefits out of it – There is no $30 Sign up bonus for you to join Remitly. A little disappointed with the blatant lie.

  3. You may have mistaken that you will receive $30.00 in your account as opposed to “Send $100.00 and receive a $30.00 Amazon Gift Card” – – Check this link http://remit.ly/1mIR5OK – it clearly tells you that if you send $100.00, you will get a $30.00 Amazon Gift Card – -However, this link is only valid for the Philippines. Not sure what Srikant had on his link. I think for India, you have to send $1000 to get up to $40.00 in Amazon Gift Card.
