If you are a regular reader here, you may already know that I am one who cares not to judge. I know that I can never cast the first stone. Judging is not for me. I can only present facts. I like reading about controversial celebrities and I always wonder what makes them tick. That is why I try to step back, look at the big picture and see what they are all about. This time, we’re going to delve into the timeline of Willie Revillame’s rise and fall.
(Manila, Phlippines) One of the most controversial figures in Philippine television is Willie Revillame. Because of the controversies, he rose to fame and became a household name. One of the best shows that aired on national television as a noon time show is Wowowee. The noontime show that made a fortune for both ABS-CBN and Willie Revillame. It was a success and no one can dispute that. However, as much as the people loved the show, there were times that the people themselves criticized the host for doing something in bad taste and viewed as “big-headedness”. Para sa mga viewers, alam nilang magaling na host si Willie pero sumobra daw ang yabang. Naging mapagmaliit daw siya ng tao ng siya ay yumaman ng sobra.
Of course, having the most successful show on ABS-CBN, a global network at that, gives you something to be proud of. Wowowee was making so much money for the network that they almost gave Willie anything and everything that he asked for.
Don’t get me wrong. Willie Revillame has made movies before his stint as the host of Wowowee in 2005. He was on television for almost 20 years before Wowowee. But nothing made him more money than Wowowee. Despite of controversies (Stampede in 2006 at Phils Sports Arena), and in 2009, he angered many including journalists when he yelled at the production staff for inserting the live feed of Pres. Corazon Aquino’s funeral on the show while they were dancing and singing. He wanted the live feed removed but delivered the request in bad taste that most Filipinos around the globe showed their dislike for his arrogance.
That must have been the last straw for the people who patronized the show. Even after that event, Willie was so sure that he can survive with a show in another network when he joined TV5 and tried to recreate the same variety show in a different format.
TV5 is not a global network. They are not far-reaching as ABS-CBN. That could be one of the reasons that the show didn’t prosper as much. Or it could be something else. But, the fact is, it didn’t work. Inasmuch as they hoped that the show could bring TV5 into an international competing network, it didn’t pan out – – just yet.
The smart thing about Willie Revillame is investing in real estate. What would you do kung tapos na ang kasikatan mo? How will you maintain your lifestyle? By investing in something that is residual na kahit nakaupo ka lang, kumikita ng pera. And that’s real estate.
In the 5 years that he reigned as the Best Male TV Host, he earned an obscene amount of money. And for him, investing that income into something that will eventually give him returns after he’s done with show business was very wise to say that least.
He had that gift in entertaining people. Young or old. I remember how the lolas and lolos loved him and his show. But then again, sabi nga nila – hindi lagi nasa itaas ka. That’s just the rule of a fair universe. Kaya kahit kailan, hindi tayo puwedeng magmalaki. Yun lang yon.
Lessons learned. Now that he’s retired from television, I’m sure he has enough to worry about with his businesses. For sure, this will not be the last we’ll hear of Wilie Revillame. Trust me on that.
