Years after I have gone away with posts about Filipino and Hollywood Celebrities, I noticed a decline in my blog readership. It’s not a fault. It’s just how it is. Most of the blogs who have a large following are blogs with one theme. The theme could be fashion, travel, technology, humor, sarcasm, satire, or whatever else exists out there. This is due to the fact that the readers know what they came back to read. If they love fashion, they will go to Bryanboy.com because he blogs about fashion. If they want technology, they will visit Mashable.com. It’s that simple right?
When I started blogging in 2007, my goal was to create a personal blog which was inspired by someone random in the blogosphere. He was a simple guy (with a great body of course!) who was just starting a family. He would post photos of himself, and his wife and tell a short story in each post. When they had a baby, he would post delightful posts with pure admiration for his daughter. He would sometimes post just one sentence that would say, “I miss Merlin” and show a photo of their deceased dog, a Shih Tzu. I followed his blog completely until he shut it down. I guess he posted too many shirtless photos of himself that his wife probably felt uncomfortable with. (He had all the rights to post shirtless photos – – his body was amazing!)
But, having a personal blog is not the same as any blog with a theme to it. You don’t have masses of people flocking to your site to read what drama you had over the weekend or what you will have for breakfast the next day. It takes someone to have some type of a connection with the blogger in order to get him or her to come back. My problem is that I am so inconsistent with my postings. At times, I will blog about celebrities, and at times politics. There will be times when I blog about my travels, and struggles but never a theme that is constant. That’s how my mind works. It’s in constant chaos.
Sometimes I wonder if I have ADHD. I find it hard to focus on one subject for a long time. i GET BORED! That is why my blog goes from one extreme post to another. I could be passionate about one thing today but lose interest tomorrow. It’s difficult to maintain a blog. That’s just the honest truth.
The reward I get is when someone emails me directly to tell me how much they love my blog. Some people will email me saying that they loved my post. It is a good feeling. And when you get advertisers knocking at your door to advertise on your blog, that says something doesn’t it? Somehow, I have an audience. For that, I am very grateful.
If you read my blog, what is your opinion? Do you think I need to focus on one theme and one theme only? Or do I continue what I do today?
