TORONTO, Ontario, Canada—We continue with our coverage of our visit to the set of “The Echo” in Toronto: We chatted with Iza Calzado, who reprises her role in Yam Laranas’ American remake of his film, “Sigaw.”
Yam brought us to Iza’s trailer for this interview. Of Yam, Iza said: “The cast and crew enjoy working with him. They say he’s a cool guy. It’s a relief to have him as director of my first international film—he makes me proud!”
Iza recently met Kevin Durand, who plays her policeman husband in “The Echo.” “He’s 6’6” tall!,” she exclaimed.
As for the film’s lead actor, Jesse Bradford (“Flags of Our Fathers”), Iza claimed the actor is now addicted to dried mangoes. Iza had brought with her many packets of this Philippine snack. She recounted her father’s warning: “Anak, baka harangin ka sa Customs sa dami ng dala mong dried mangoes!”
Iza said that, in one scene with Jesse, he couldn’t stop laughing. She explained that he was amused at the unusual situation he found himself in during the scene.
He eventually suppressed the fit and finished the scene, which we’re sure will be one of the film’s scary highlights. She also showed us pictures she took with her camera, when she was being fitted with a harness.
Carlos Leon, Madonna’s ex and father of her daughter, Lourdes, is done filming his part. Iza shared, “Carlos was the first actor I acted with. He’s very nice. He was my lunch buddy for a couple of days.” She also found a lot of things in common with Amelia Warner, who plays Jesse’s girlfriend.
Prosthetics
Jamie Bloch, who portrays Iza’s daughter, passed by. The young actress, similarly attired as Iza, had a mass of frizzy hair, which was sprayed to look darker. She had prosthetics on, but her face was not made to look as battered as Iza’s. “She’s sweet, beautiful and smart!,” Iza described Jamie.
The 25-year-old actress is enjoying her first time to be on her own. “In Manila, I’m always surrounded by people. I love talking to people, but I also like having all this time to think!”
What she misses most about Manila is having her own personal trainer. She goes to the gym in her Toronto apartment building. Iza’s LA-based boyfriend, Jerry Garcia, who manages a rock band, has visited her here.
When we stepped out of her trailer, Iza introduced us to Paul Jones, the veteran make-up artist (Clive Owen’s “Shoot ’Em Up”) who created her heavily bruised look.
After finishing her scenes this week, Iza will fly back to Manila today (Saturday), to plunge right back into her busy TV schedule, and to begin a movie with Taiwanese actor cum pop star, Ken Zhu, which will be shot in Batanes.
The plot of the movie, to be directed by Adolfo Alix Jr., sounds interesting: A Taiwanese fisherman, washed ashore in Batanes, meets Iza and, despite not knowing each other’s language, they fall in love.
Sweet smile
With a sweet smile, Iza bared, “I ‘visualized’ playing the role in ‘The Echo.’” Despite the obstacles that seemed to initially block her chances of reprising her role, Iza believes that her positive outlook made it possible for her to finally make it to the Toronto set. She “visualized” the “Batanes” role, too.
“Now, I ‘visualize’ that I will be guesting on Oprah’s show someday!,” she mused. With her success rate at this unique practice, Iza just might be meeting Oprah soon!
Later, Iza gave us an update via e-mail about filming her most important scenes in “The Echo”: “I was beaten up by a 6’6” guy (Kevin Durand) today. Our scene was so intense—I spent half the day crying! He’s such a good actor; I love working with him. In real life, he’s the opposite of his character. He’s a sweet, gentle guy!”
