Iza Calzado starstruck with Jesse Bradford during filming of “Echo”

 jesse_bradford.jpg

PHOTO by Jesse Bradford via Inquirer.net. The H’wood actor took this snapshot with his left hand, recalls Iza.

MANILA, Philippines - On the day she was being fitted with a “face cast” by prosthetic makeup expert Paul Jones on the set of Yam Laranas’ “The Echo” in Toronto, Iza Calzado was grinning from ear to ear.

“He asked why I was always smiling,” recalls Calzado, now back in Manila. “I told him it was because I couldn’t believe I was in Canada, shooting a Hollywood movie.”

To think, she plays an abused wife in the US remake of “Sigaw.” “I was bugbog [battered], emotionally and physically throughout the month-long shoot.”

That was why she had made “cheerfulness” her goal (and coping mechanism): “I simply enjoyed myself.”

Kiddie crush

But who wouldn’t have a blast, having US hunk Jesse Bradford as co-star?

“He was my crush when he was a kid in ‘King of the Hill.’ But I didn’t want to look star-struck, so I played it cool.”

Although she had stopped herself from asking for an autograph, she cinched a snapshot with Bradford. “He took our photo [with his free arm]. He said he was good in taking pictures that way.”

Bradford is a total pro, she recounts. “One time, the stand-in could’ve covered for him, but still he turned up and did the scene with me. I love the feeling when the actor is in the same place, emotionally, with me. I wish we had more scenes together.”

Calzado also has fond memories of screen husband Kevin Durand, Russell Crowe’s current co-star in the hit Western “3:10 to Yuma.” “He’s a very intelligent actor. He asked questions and would discuss scenes with me,” Calzado relates.

She says that she also hit it off with co-star Amelia Warner of “The Seeker: The Dark is Rising” fame. “She said she had watched ‘Sigaw’ and that she liked it. ”

On the set, they gabbed about Philippine beaches, but the “funny thing was, in our scene together, we didn’t get to talk much.”

Just as amiable was Carlos Leon (yup, dad of Madonna’s firstborn Lourdes), who was her “lunch buddy” on her first few days in Canada. “When he first saw me, he thought I was also Latino. He encouraged me to try out for Hispanic roles.”

They ended up chatting about everything—from fruits (watermelon, grapes) to pet causes. “He commended me after learning that I host a public service show (“At Your Service Star Power” on QTV).”

In sum, she tags her Toronto trip, “liberating and fulfilling.”

Liberating, she explains, because she experienced “the freedom of walking in the streets in relative anonymity … and fulfilling because it was a dream come true.”

Back in Manila, she is packing her bags once again, to shoot Adolf Alix and Dave Hukom’s “Batanes.” She is enthusiastic, to say the least. “I saw the trailer of [Alix’s previous film] ‘Kadin’ and found Batanes inspiring.”

New screen guy

Cameras start grinding first week of October. Here, she co-stars with Taiwan’s Ken Zhu, star of “Meteor Garden” and formerly of the boy band F4.

As in “The Echo,” she did research on her co-star, prior to filming.

“I checked out Ken’s website and found out that he does a lot of charity work for children … and that he cooks,” she exclaims. “I love him already!”

On the set of ‘The Echo’ with Iza Calzado

mc_nov05_hr.jpg

TORONTO, Ontario, Canada—We continue with our coverage of our visit to the set of “The Echo” in Toronto: We chatted with Iza Calzado, who reprises her role in Yam Laranas’ American remake of his film, “Sigaw.”

Yam brought us to Iza’s trailer for this interview. Of Yam, Iza said: “The cast and crew enjoy working with him. They say he’s a cool guy. It’s a relief to have him as director of my first international film—he makes me proud!”

Iza recently met Kevin Durand, who plays her policeman husband in “The Echo.” “He’s 6’6” tall!,” she exclaimed.

As for the film’s lead actor, Jesse Bradford (“Flags of Our Fathers”), Iza claimed the actor is now addicted to dried mangoes. Iza had brought with her many packets of this Philippine snack. She recounted her father’s warning: “Anak, baka harangin ka sa Customs sa dami ng dala mong dried mangoes!”

Iza said that, in one scene with Jesse, he couldn’t stop laughing. She explained that he was amused at the unusual situation he found himself in during the scene.

He eventually suppressed the fit and finished the scene, which we’re sure will be one of the film’s scary highlights. She also showed us pictures she took with her camera, when she was being fitted with a harness.

Carlos Leon, Madonna’s ex and father of her daughter, Lourdes, is done filming his part. Iza shared, “Carlos was the first actor I acted with. He’s very nice. He was my lunch buddy for a couple of days.” She also found a lot of things in common with Amelia Warner, who plays Jesse’s girlfriend.

Prosthetics

Jamie Bloch, who portrays Iza’s daughter, passed by. The young actress, similarly attired as Iza, had a mass of frizzy hair, which was sprayed to look darker. She had prosthetics on, but her face was not made to look as battered as Iza’s. “She’s sweet, beautiful and smart!,” Iza described Jamie.

The 25-year-old actress is enjoying her first time to be on her own. “In Manila, I’m always surrounded by people. I love talking to people, but I also like having all this time to think!”

What she misses most about Manila is having her own personal trainer. She goes to the gym in her Toronto apartment building. Iza’s LA-based boyfriend, Jerry Garcia, who manages a rock band, has visited her here.

When we stepped out of her trailer, Iza introduced us to Paul Jones, the veteran make-up artist (Clive Owen’s “Shoot ’Em Up”) who created her heavily bruised look.

After finishing her scenes this week, Iza will fly back to Manila today (Saturday), to plunge right back into her busy TV schedule, and to begin a movie with Taiwanese actor cum pop star, Ken Zhu, which will be shot in Batanes.

The plot of the movie, to be directed by Adolfo Alix Jr., sounds interesting: A Taiwanese fisherman, washed ashore in Batanes, meets Iza and, despite not knowing each other’s language, they fall in love.

Sweet smile

With a sweet smile, Iza bared, “I ‘visualized’ playing the role in ‘The Echo.’” Despite the obstacles that seemed to initially block her chances of reprising her role, Iza believes that her positive outlook made it possible for her to finally make it to the Toronto set. She “visualized” the “Batanes” role, too.

“Now, I ‘visualize’ that I will be guesting on Oprah’s show someday!,” she mused. With her success rate at this unique practice, Iza just might be meeting Oprah soon!

Later, Iza gave us an update via e-mail about filming her most important scenes in “The Echo”: “I was beaten up by a 6’6” guy (Kevin Durand) today. Our scene was so intense—I spent half the day crying! He’s such a good actor; I love working with him. In real life, he’s the opposite of his character. He’s a sweet, gentle guy!”

Iza Calzado all set to shoot her first Hollywood movie

iza_calzado.JPG

Aniya, “I’m not sure if I’m allowed to divulge such information. May changes but basically I will still play the same person, ‘yung ghost pa rin, ako pa rin.”

“Tinanong ni Direk Yam [Laranas, director of Sigaw and The Echo] ‘yung isang casting director, ‘Do you think she has a shot in it?’ Nagustuhan daw kasi nung casting director ang trabaho ko, so parang noong tinanong niya [Direk Yam], ‘Do you think she has a chance?’ [Sagot ng casting director], ‘Yeah. I just need an audition material.’”

Nag-audition si Iza through a video camera at ipinadala ito sa casting director sa U.S. She did a scene from the screenplay of The Echo.

“Ang alam ko lang, I’m up against one girl na… she’s not yet an actress but celebrity na siya doon. No clue, sorry,” sabi ni Iza.

Samantala, agad naman na itinanggi ni Iza na malaki ang magiging talent fee niya para sa The Echo dahil pang-Hollywood ito.

Paliwanag niya, “Huwag ninyong isipin na sobrang laki kasi, kumbaga, for that production, I’m getting minimum rate. But, you know, so far compared to the other films that I’ve done here, it’s bigger than what I’ve gotten here. So I think minus the taxes and all that, it’s gonna amount to pretty much the same.”

YAM LARANAS.

How Awesome is Stephen King?

My brother took me to see a film when I was young - - the movie was Salem’s Lot. I had never seen a movie that scared me so much! I found out that the writer of the book was Stephen King - - ever since, I have followed his novels.

American novelist and short-story writer, whose enormously popular books revived the interest in horror fiction from the 1970s. King’s place in the modern horror fiction can be compared to that of J.R.R. Tolkien’s who created the modern genre of fantasy. Like Anthony Trollope, Charles Dickens or Balzac in his La Comédie humaine, King has expressed the fundamental concerns of his era, and used the horror genre as his own branch of artistic expression. King has underlined, that even in the world of cynicism, despair, and cruelties, it remains possible for individuals to find love and discover unexpected resources in themselves. His characters often conquer their own problems and malevolent powers that would suppress or destroy them.

“I wish I could get away from horror for a while, and I do - or I think I do, and then suddenly I discover that I’m like the guy in the poem by Auden who runs and runs and finally ends up in a cheap, one-night hotel. He goes down a hallway and opens a door, and there he meets himself sitting under a naked light bulb, writing.” (King in Faces of Fear by Douglas E. Winter, 1990)
