Drive to a whole new level at the Manila International Auto Show 2012

The 17th World Building and Construction Exposition (WORLDBEX) once again proved to be a success. Over 152,000 visitors flocked to the World Trade Center Metro Manila and experienced 30,000 sq. m. of booths and exhibits from local and international industry players.

“WORLDBEX leads the future of the construction industry in the Philippines by providing an avenue where local suppliers can showcase their products globally and likewise giving Filipinos an opportunity to see what the international market has to offer,” says Joseph Ang, founding chair of Worldbex Services International (WSI).

Store your online files and photos in a cloud? Why?

I am deathly afraid of losing all my blog data.  I started blogging in 2006 and all my files are still in one place today.  I am afraid that should anything happen to my web host or to my blog configuration, I may lose everything.

I’ve heard many things about the cloud trend and I even have an option on my iPhone to store my stuff on the cloud but I can’t get myself to do it.  Somehow, I believe that storing my photos in a cloud violates my privacy.  Having an online back up of my precious photos is a wonderful thing to think about but what happens to my photos?  Do they become public property?

So, I started looking into online back-ups,  cloud storage and they all look fine to me.  What I look for are review sites like egnyte where I can see the top 10 recommended sites for online backups.  You can find information why backing up your files is important through their blog and see what sites offer the best service should you need one.

I currently have an external hard drive where I store all my files.  It works for now but I  am almost out of capacity. I know that one day, I will give into online storage.   For now, not just yet.

2012 at the PTTC. Twelve prestigious local and foreign speakers will tackle a wide range of topics

concerning entrepreneurial architecture, leadership and management, urban planning, furniture design,

and advocacies in the fields of architecture and construction.

Various exhibits will be on display during WORLDBEX 2012. Among these include the Furniture

Gallery, which will showcase the intricate works of movable art in the form of classical and modern

furniture designs; The Architects’ and Interior Designers’ Gallery which will house works and

concepts by the country’s top-notch architects and high-calibre interior designers whose works have been

recognized not only in the Asia Pacific region, but around the world as well.

Meanwhile the Grand Embassy Pavilion will be top billed by various foreign embassies and will

discuss the different products, services, technologies, and leads to encourage mutual support from the

international community.

All these will solidify WORLDBEX 2012 as the show where one can get maximum leads and sale

opportunities for any product and service in the industry.

Coca-Cola to celebrate its 100th Year in the Philippines by appointing a President for Happiness?

I was in my International Marketing class the other night and we talked about branding. One of the photos shared during the presentation was Coca-Cola in Zimbabwe. My professor said, “You will recognize Coca-Cola anywhere you go. Just the red sign and white letters is enough for you to say, COKE!”   It started with Coca-Cola promising the American troops who fought during the World War that they will be able to get Coca-Cola anywhere they were in the world. So, Coke built tents and shipped Coca-Cola to bases around the world. But when the war ended, Coca-Cola stayed.

New Year, New Beginning. Planning to make a major purchase? How is your credit rating?

I don’t know about you all but I have been following a tradition yearly. Each year, as my W2s come in through the mail, I make it a point that during the time that I file my taxes to make a request for my free annual credit report. You do know that as an American, you have the right to one free credit report a year right?

Why do I do this? Because it is wise to keep on top of your credit records. I have found in years past that there are inaccuracies in my credit report (a bill that didn’t belong to me or a negative point on a bill that I have paid long ago) that needs correction. Your credit report matters because your credit score is generated from it. If you have a lot of negative points in your credit report, chances are that your credit score will be lower and result in higher interest rates on your credit cards and anything else that you borrow.

You can fix your credit report yourself by reviewing the data after you receive a report and request correction from the credit bureaus but it takes time. You have to have patience in dealing with the credit bureaus in order to correct any issues you may find on your credit report. However, there are services out there like rmcn credit services where they do the work for you. They can contact the credit bureaus on your behalf and resolve any issues that you may have on your report.

This is something that you should treat lightly. Your credit report and credit score matters a lot because it gives you the
power to be successful financially. Getting lower interest rates and getting approved for loans in case you need one is a big
deal specially now that banks have become very strict in lending. If you’re planning to make a major purchase such as buying a home or a car, you should review your credit report first. Trust me, you’ll get a better deal and better interest rate if your credit
is in check.

If I had a farm…

Small businesses are sprouting up everywhere these days. For the millions of people who were laid off during the global economic meltdown, most are still looking for jobs. The ones who have given up looking for jobs and were in a position to open up their small business did so. Some were successful, and some weren’t. But that should not deter us from creating something that we believe would take us out of a bad situation.

I had always thought of owning a farm. Maybe “running a farm” is better. I love animals and just the thought of me getting up in the wee hours in the morning to feed the chickens or gather eggs seems fun. Imagine milking cows and really seeing how milk gets to our breakfast table. Those things make me wonder.

My grandmom had a piggery back home. I remember when she would raise the pigs and come time to sell them, these guys would come with a huge truck and they will purchase the pig from my grandmom by weight. Yes, they use weight as the basis for pricing the pig. But the weighing method they used looked a bit cruel to the pig. The would strap the pig with a harness and lift it up by use of a small crane. You can hear the pig scream from miles away.

Technology is always there to thank for creating better methods and process for us to become better. Have you seen the new livestock scale available today? They are what my grandmom should have had access to during those days. The pig could easily be put on the scale standing up and voila! Weight is measured. No loud screams, no uncomfortable position for the pig. I wish it was that easy back then.

But hey, that’s what technology is for. We have to think of better ways to do things. And yes, if I do get to own a farm someday – - I will let you all know. :)

One thing you would never want to yell out: “My computer crashed!”

Have you ever had a computer crash on you only to lose all the important files and data you’ve stored through the years? We’re always taught to back up our data from the start. When we learned how to use a computer, the number one thing we were taught was to make sure we back up our data.

No one really learns. They still don’t back up their data, continue to store their data in CDs or DVDs, and go on their merry way. But if you work on a lot of spreadsheets and documents at work, you will learn fast on how important it is to keep saving your data. If you lose the data on something that you’ve worked on for hours or weeks, you will pretty much kick yourself in the behind. That’s why many software makers incorporated auto-save in their programs. Still, it doesn’t work well if you’re computer crashes on you.

Here’s the latest trend now. You can now store all your valuable data, photos, files in what you may think of as a safe deposit box at the bank. Yes, it is totally outside of your personal computer and you can keep your files there safely and have access to it whenever you need them. For a small fee, you can have limited space but for an additional small fee – you can have unlimited space where you can store your most important files and data without having to worry if you will accidentally lose them or not. But like everything else, don’t just go with the first one you find. There are lots of different services out there and different prices. If you are smart, you would choose the best one with medium price, and yet have been reviewed greatly by people who have already used them. Don’t go with the self-promotions that companies do – - follow the trail, visit sites that offer online backup reviews and read the comments people have about these companies that offer the service. The reviews could be helpful in assisting you with your decision.

Sometimes, it’s harder to make a decision without speaking to someone who have had experience with the product you are trying to purchase. It really helps to hear the reviews from the people who have the actual experience with the service in order to decide well.

If you have files or data cluttering your home computer or laptop, maybe it’s time to think about cloud-computing. Store it in the cloud – the safe deposit box for your important files, data and photos. You’ll thank me one day.

I’m thinking of getting away. Now that winter is near, how about Tampa, Florida?

I wish I could be one of those snowbirds who fly south for the winter months.  I like the fall weather and I can stand the weather just fine.  And it’s pretty with all the leaves changing colors all throughout the northeast.  But, winter is not my thing.  And when it’s freezing cold outside, what better place to go than Florida?

My first trip to Florida was with my sister and her family.  We took the train and from New York to Florida, you have a chance to see how beautiful America really is.  With Amtrak though, we were able to take my brother-in-law’s car and by the time we got there, we had not problems going around.  Having a car in Florida is a must and if  you’re around the Orlando area, there are other sites you would like to visit other than Disney World.

I have a friend who moved to Tampa and I would like to pay him a visit this winter.  The problem is that he had used up all of his vacation days and will not be able to spend the week with me unless it’s night time or a weekend. I am actually planning my trip now and since he’s not going to be able to run around with me, I am checking up on a Tampa car rental place where I could rent a car for a week so I can see the sights (wink wink!!) while he’s working. I sure am not going to wake up at 5:30 a.m. in the morning to take him to work so I can use his car for the day. I am on vacation!

So, if any readers out there know of a good car rental place in Tampa, please give a shout.

Looking for a place in Phoenix? You may have just found the right place…

I am doing this for a friend of mine. He has really done well during the real estate boom and for some, the boom turned into disaster while to others, it was a gold mine. For those people who bought and sold properties at the proper time, they made it all the way to the bank. My friend did have some luck on some of his properties including a property that he purchased in Arizona.
The problem he is having now is that he needs to move back to the east coast and live in one of the houses he bought in New Jersey, but he’s not going to make a profit from his Arizona home if he sells it today. So, he is looking for good phoenix property management companies in the Arizona area just so he can rent out his place
and move back to the east coast.

I know that many people are moving around these days due to the economy and the need for jobs. Jobs may be the main reason for them to move and sometimes, when you do consulting work in an area, you don’t really want to purchase a home right there and then. So, if you know of anyone knows a good property manaement company in Arizona, please do leave a comment below because my friend
really needs to move to the east coast soon. Or, if you are looking for a place to rent in the Phonix area, leave a comment below as well.

I am throwing this post out there with the hopes that someone might be looking for a place in Phoenix.

Thanks and have a great day!

Brazil… what is it about you that makes me love you so much?

I’ve been to many countries around the world.  You can probably tell if you visit the Travel Category on this blog.  I’ve experienced the hospitality of the people in Asia, Europe and South America.  But the one thing that sticks out is the experience I had while visiting Brazil.  Why?  Because Brazil has very close similarities to the Filipino culture.  A culture deeply embedded in the Catholic faith, warm and hospitable people and people who love what we Filipinos love…. FOOD!

When I was traveling with my friends who have been to Brazil many times before I even stepped foot on the land of beautiful people, I was led to try the most wonderful food choices around Brazil.  One of the most popular was the local bread or pastry called pão de queijo”, the local cheese bread.  It’s this yummy, to-die-for bread injected with cheese inside.  I know, you’re probably thinking what’s so special about it right?  It’s something that you have to try to understand.

Once I got a taste of it, I was addicted.  So, every time I visit Brazil (I’ve been there every year for the past three years), it’s something that I have to have.

And guess what?  They are branching out in Manila!  Yup!  The company, Casa do Pão will be opening up in Manila with their famous cheese bread.  So, you don’t have to go to Brazil to try it out.  It is coming to you.  What’s more?  The business is starting out this coming September with a soft launch and go full blast thereafter.  You will be hearing about it on local TV stations soon.  If you want to get in at the bottom of this business, you can invest in a cart as a start up.  You can find more information about the business if you visit their website.  If I were you, and you are looking for a business venture – you should look into this.  This could be a start of a very profitable business.

Experience the best with your HDTV – Use Optimization Cables.

Last summer, I purchased a plasma TV. I just bought it because I needed a TV for my living room and plasma TVs are the cheapest nowadays. Remember when they used to cost in the upwards of ten thousand dollars? Those days are gone, with the release of LED TVs and LCD TVs – the plasma technology is no longer the best in the industry. But I bought it anyway since it still delivers what I need.

However, I noticed that it projected better pictures while at the store – when I took it home, it wasn’t the same. The images are kinda blurry and you can see patches when watching HD shows. I thought I bought a defective one. However, I found out that projecting HD to your TV requires HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cables. That’s what they use at the store and if you ask any expert on that section, they will tell you that in order to optimize your viewing pleasure (specially with HD capable TVs), you need HDMI cables.

And the fanaticism begins. Prince William and Kate Middleton Swarovski Crystal Cell Phone Cases.

I am a fan.  Alright, I said it!

I love Royal Weddings.  I didn’t witness the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana (I wasn’t born yet.. ha!) but this time, I am not going to miss the upcoming wedding of Prince William and future Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton.

I don’t think I’m going to buy anything and everything William and Kate though – but some of you might.

I’ve seen commemoration plates come out, mugs, stamps, dolls…. but this is a crazy one.   Cell phone cases made of Swarovski Crystals.  Ha!  I have an iPhone and I am tempted to buy just so I can have it as a collectible.  Because in a few months, you know what’s going to happen right?  The iPhone 4 will be replaced with a new design that would render this case useless.. but who cares?  It has William and Kate on it.  I can sell it in year 2055 and make big profit!  I just have to hold on to it till then.  Ha!  I’m sure it will be featured in the Antique’s Roadshow by then.  Hehe!

Anyway – if you’d like to purchase, for a mere $220.00USD, you can own one.  iPhone, Blackberry – - doesn’t matter.

Wearing scrubs would be a good alternative for someone like me.

Friends of mine are mostly nurses. Male nurses that is. Some of them have already completed other degrees in Fine Arts and Computer Science but found it more lucrative to go into the medical field for a better future or simply a change in career path. One of the complaints I do hear from them is having to wear nothing but medical scrubs. Remember, they were used to wearing suits & ties from their previous careers and having to wear scrubs
daily now takes a toll on them because the scrubs are mostly basic and loose-fitting. One of my buddies is a gym buff and enjoyed wearing tight-fitting clothes.

But most recently, scrubs for men have undergone some wonderful evolution. Even the scrub pants now come in low-rise designs and the tops are now cut in a slimming cut which would delight my buddy who enjoys showing his physique. He can be as stylish now and enjoy wearing scrubs because it has evolved so much than the more traditional scrubs medical professionals use to wear.

I still work in an office (corporate office for that matter) and we are not allowed to wear anything but dress pants and dress shirts during the week except on Fridays when we get to wear business casual clothing including jeans. If you ask me, I wouldn’t mind wearing surgical scrubs everyday just because clothes are so expensive nowadays. To buy a good quality dress shirt could cost you up to fifty dollars a piece, and you would have to have at least a good mix that you could rotate every other week.

Since the scrubs that are in the market today are more “fashionable” so-to-speak, I wouldn’t mind it. I think my friends are just whiners. LOL! They have a lot of good options nowadays when it comes to wearing scrubs. I personally think that it is better to be in scrubs and comfortable than to wear the monkey suits I wear everyday. But I guess, to each his own.

Travel Insurance: Does anyone need it?

I’ve traveled a lot most specially in the last four years.  I’ve always wanted to travel ever since I was younger but I just had two issues back then.

  • Didn’t have enough money to travel
  • Didn’t have much time off to travel

Now that those two issues have been resolved, and that I have found better ways to travel on a bargain, I have been able to travel 18 per cent of the globe.  Yes, at least that’s what one website tells me.  Still a very low percentage but it’s a good percentage if you look at the length of when I started traveling extensively.

Most of the issues you run into when traveling is getting ill while away from home.  Most of us don’t think that because if you travel mostly in Europe or Canada, you can pretty much say that getting ill may be unlikely.  But if you travel in the most exotic parts of the globe, you may get ill very easily depending on how careful you are with diet and acclimation to the climate.

I’ve known many folks who traveled extensively while they were students and I envy them.  They go to see the world earlier than I did but I have no regrets.  One advice I would give students who travel a lot is to obtain extra health insurance that would cover you while you are traveling and way from home.  There are  student health insurances available out there.  You can take chances but if you’re flying to a place to go sky diving or if you’re a thrill-seeker and love to do adventurous things while traveling, I would suggest you obtain one since you’ll never know what could happen.

Getting injured while you’re traveling could be a nightmare if you are not well-covered.  You can opt to get health insurance for a minimal fee and these types of insurance can be valid from 6-12  months if you’re going to be away that long.

I’m relaunching my Online Store. You can now call me toll free anywhere in the world.

When I had my online store open, I had to make sure that customers are properly attended to when they call to ask about a product or service that I was offering. It was kind of tough for me to be working full time and running an online store at the same time. Usually, I review all my calls at the end of the day or review email inquiries during lunchtime and so forth.

I had a toll-free number registered back then as well because my business was global. I can accept orders from anywhere in the world and had to be sure that each customer received the proper treatment individually. The problem with my toll-free number before is that I pay a monthly fee for certain minutes that I expected to use and if I don’t use all the minutes that I paid for, I lose them.

Now, an available service called toll free forwarding is something that I can make use of. The calls can be forwarded to any phone I designate so regardless if I am at work or not, I could receive the calls and take them if necessary. And not only that, I get to roll over the minutes that I don’t use to the next month and save money in that way.

I am now looking for viable products to sell and do wait for the announcement of the relaunch of my online store. I was quite successful with it during the time but it was time-consuming and I really couldn’t juggle a full-time job, school and running a business at the time. Now that I am done with school, it will be easier to manage than before.

Wait for the launch people!! It’s coming soon!

Target completion of bathroom remodeling: Spring 2011

It’s been over a year since I started working on my bathroom. It started out with the paint peeling off the walls because of the steam that was caused by the dryer. After a while, the paint on the walls had to be scraped and boy, I didn’t know how much work had to be done since I started.

Even after I’ve completed the painting, something still seems to be missing and I cannot seem to accomplish the task of completing the bathroom renovation. But I’m not giving up just yet. I have put so much hard work in re-doing the bathroom that I wanted to finally finish it before Spring this year.

I was trying to get ideas because my bathroom is very small and there are no windows. On top of that, the washer-dryer is in the bathroom as well so space is really limited. I looked online and browsed through several websites to get an idea on what would look great in such a small bathroom considering the space I have to work with. One website I looked at was www.betterbathrooms.com and I did get some ideas on whether I should put a pedestal sink or a full vanity sink. Just because the bathroom is small doesn’t mean that I can’t put a full vanity in there. The only question is: Do I really want a vanity.

I wanted to modernize the bath as well so I am looking for fixtures and a vanity that are space-conscious and not too expensive.

Spring is the target! Wish me luck on this one!

Someone is about to get filthy rich selling Buko Juice

You see. This is why I encourage entrepreneurial minds to constantly test out ideas because one of these days, you can hit the jackpot. Sometimes, the product you have been searching for is right under your nose.

If you’re from the Philippines or Vietnam and maybe even Rio de Janeiro, you would have experienced drinking “buko juice” straight from a young coconut. Very good huh? Natural, safe, no carbonation etc. etc.

Simple things can protect little children.

I am still wondering how my sister can take care of four kids by herself. You all may know that I am alone (yes, not even a partner) and even with that, I cannot even take care of the stuff that I have to take care of. But, four kids?? Yikes.
My sister is really good with kids though and I can even see her spending all day with her kids without freaking out. I must say, it must take natural talent to be a parent. One time, she took her kids for a ride on the subways of New York and took
them to Coney Island – by herself?! Whew! She would take them shopping and go to parks on weekends as well.

One thing that I worry about is that one of my niece has a very mild case of autism. She is very smart and so lovable. I do worry about her when she’s at children’s parks with the other kids who may or may not know about her condition and the way
they may play with her. Other kids could be rough when playing and so I told my sister to make sure that she only takes her to playgrounds where there are protection from rough play. You know how some of the playgrounds do install safety rubber corners
and pads for the slides and beneath the swings. These are high-impact areas where children needs protection and I applaud the cities who use these types of protection for their kids. Do you know that they use rubber mulch in some places? They prove to
be safe and protects children from injuries and such. If you’d like to know more about these and possibly recommend them to your community playground, check out rubber mulch FAQ’s.

There are many things that you can do to protect your children not only on playgrounds but simple instructions on how not to speak to strangers or to always stay in sight whenever they are outside. Little things do matter and I can only hope that all
parents take the initiative to teach their children how to deal with simple but dangerous situations.

I do applaud my sister for her courage and her patience with her children. Maybe one day, when I have my own – I will be as patient and understanding as she is.

When life was easy and things were simple.

Ahh. The good old days. You may not even think that it was once a lifestyle for Chuva Chienes to be riding horses in my grandfather’s horse stables when I was growing up. My grandfather used to breed champion race horses. I also remember attending awards ceremonies where my father received awards for his horses. Those were the days.

Without giving my age away… (wink, wink), during those times my grand dad’s horses were trained in pure dirt roads. His horse trainers were in charge of rotating the training for his champion pure-bred horses early in the morning. In the afternoon, his grandchildren would take a ride on these horses for fun.

Do you have marble floors at home? Ceramic tile floors? Have you ever slipped and fallen? It’s more common than you think. I just wrote a post about elderly falling without anyone around and how they can protect themselves through new technological advances.

Better yet, do you own a restaurant or operate a store of some kind? Do you know that every little spill can cause someone to fall? Do you know the repercussions if someone else takes a fall within your property. It could take your business away.

What would have happened if no one were around?  I live alone so one of my greatest fear is if I go through a real emergency and no one is around to even know that something is wrong.

Strange but cool. The Shining Cuckoo Clock – - awesome!

Haha! How would you like to be freaked out of your gourd every hour on the hour with this new cuckoo clock? Beats the original cuckoo clock with the “tweet-tweet” doesn’t it?
