Bb. Pilipinas-World Janina San Miguel backs out from Miss World beauty pageant

Bb. Pilipinas-World 2008 Janina San Miguel has decided to quit as the Philippines’ representative tp the Miss World 2008 beauty pageant that will be held on December 14 at Johannesburg, South Africa,

In a statement sent to the press by the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) earlier tonight, September 29, San Miguel cited the recent death of her grandfather as the reason of her decision to back out from the competition.

Miss Venezuela crowned Miss Universe; Miss USA trips — again

NHA TRANG, Vietnam (AP) — Miss Venezuela was crowned Miss Universe 2008 on Monday in a contest marked by the spectacle of Miss USA falling down during the evening gown competition for the second year in a row.

An elated Dayana Mendoza received the crown from her predecessor, Riyo Mori of Japan, and then prepared to meet a gaggle of reporters. Miss Venezuela, 22, was once kidnapped in her homeland and says the experience taught her to remain poised under pressure.

Five Artist Center beauties to represent the Philippines in 3rd Asian Supermodel Contest

Five Artist Center talents will fly to Guangxi, China, today, May 16, to represent the Philippines in the 3rd Asia Supermodel Contest to be held from May 16 to 25. The five beauties from GMA-7 who will compete in the said model search are young actress Rhian Ramos; Bb. Pilipinas 2007 1st runner-up Abigail Cruz; StarStruck graduates Arci Muñoz and Rhea Nakpil, and newcomer Steph Henares. Steph is the daughter of Artist Center head Ida Henares and the first cousin of Rhian.

Melanie Marquez sues cosmetic firm for P13-million

Former beauty queen Melanie Marquez has filed a P13-million damage suit against cosmetic firm Pureform for allegedly using her photograph to promote the company’s anti-aging placenta extract products without her knowledge and consent.

Using her image without permission was bad enough, according to Melanie, but what irked the 1979 Miss International even more was the fact that she’s endorsing the products of Pureform’s rival firm Psalmstre.

Bb. Pilipinas 2008-World Janina San Miguel is slowly getting more attention not because of the crown she earned, but because of her booboos during the “Question and Answer” portion of the Coronation Night last Saturday, March 8, at the Araneta Coliseum.

While people make fun of the incident—which is spreading fast in cyberspace and has more than 280,000 hits in the video-sharing website You Tube—former beauty queens, 1993 Miss World Second Princess Ruffa Gutierrez and 1979 Miss International Melanie Marquez, took it seriously and gave Janina some advice.

Alright, she won the swimsuit competition and the long evening gown competition. That’s good. Naka score ka na ng points to make it to the “tough ten”. Pero, sa interview portion - - naging bobita ang kandidata natin. It’s not just beauty kahit na beauty pageant ang tawag. You have to have brains too!!

Does she want to be the next Miss South Carolina of the Miss Teen USA contest? Nakow, ang mga judges natin. Apparently she won the title of Bb. Pilipinas-World. She was asked by Miss Vivian Tan this question, “What role did your family play for you as candidate for Bb. Pilipinas-World?”

Confident daw! “My pahmily?” “I’m so sorry, I told you I’m so confident. I’m only 17 years old.”

Surprises and upsets highlight Binibining Pilipinas 2008

A lot of beauty pageant enthusiasts thought last night’s Binibining Pilipinas 2008 coronation night had a lot of upsets and suprises. First on their list was what happened to Candidate No. 8, 18-year-old Danielle Kirsten Muriel Castaño.

Almost everyone in the Araneta Coliseum thought the pretty Quezon City teenager was sure to win any of the titles at stake. With an amazing number of special awards, plus her impressive performance during the question-and-answer portion, a lot of those who guessed her to be one of the titleholders were disappointed when she was announced as the 1^st runner-up.

Binibing Pilipinas 2008 kicks off with presentation of 24 candidates

The Bb. Pilipinas Beauty Pageant officially kicked off with the press presentation of the 24 candidates who will vie for the three crowns at stake: Bb. Pilipinas-World, Bb. Pilipinas-International, and Bb. Pilipinas-Universe. The presentation was held Thursday, February 21, at the Sunset Pavilion of Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila located at the CCP Complex, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City.

Looking all gorgeous and sexy in their red-metallic swimsuits provided by Cumbia at the Gateway, the latest batch of official candidates is as promising as ever—with law students, CPAs, medical professionals, teachers, and even an SK chairman in the roster.

Gloria Diaz says she’s not preventing daughter Isabelle from showbiz

Sa sequel ng successful Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo, ang entry ng Star Cinema Productions sa 2007 Metro Manila Film Festival entry na Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo, muli ay naranasan ni Gloria ang hirap upang maging epektibong komedyana.

“In this film, we just have to enjoy ourselves, but it’s not that easy,” sabi ng aktres sa presscon ng Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo (SSS) kahapon, November 29. “Yun ang laging sinasabi ni Joey [Reyes, their director] sa amin, na huwag naming isipin ang kung anu-ano kaya siguro kahit paano, magandang lumalabas ang mga sitwasyon.

“Ang sa amin naman, kahit ganoon, we don’t think any scene that’s supposed to be funny would turn out that way. Yun ang worry namin, kaya we should still be up on our toes, kahit ini-enjoy lang naming lahat.”

Hindi raw niya kaya ang ginagawa ng gumaganap na balae niya sa Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo na si Gina Pareño sa pagku-comedy. Kahit nga ipagkumpara sila, bow si Gloria sa husay ni Gina.

“Napapanganga na lang ako kapag kaeksena ko siya,” sambit ni Gloria. “How can I outdo her? Mahihirapan ako. Si Gina, at her age, she can still jump high. Tatalon ‘yan sa bintana, if the role calls for it.

“Sa susunod nga, naiisip ko, given the chance, magpapaka-wacky talaga ako. Kasi wala pa namang role na ibinibigay sa akin na ganoon. Siyempre, nakikita pa rin nila sa akin yung pagiging Miss Universe ko, kaya siguro.

Miss Puerto Rico Shares Story of Apparent Sabotage at Pageant

It was revealed by the officials at the Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2008 Pageant that the newly crowned (beautiful and stunning, I might add) Miss Puerto Rico Universe, Ingrid Marie Rivera, the day after the crowning that she claims she suffered from rashes and itchiness due to what seems to be pepper spray that was used on her evening gown, bathing suit and makeup kit to sabotage her chance to win the pageant.

It was rumored that the reason for the sabotage was because of the ‘inside job’ where she had already been chosen as the winner months ago.  Apparently, she was a judge last year and now she’s a contestant.  Rumors are also flying saying that she said this just to take away the news from the ‘inside job’ scandal.

Stef Prescott appeals for texters’ support in Miss Internet World competition

Magsisimula na ang Internet voting ng Miss Internet World WWW 2007. Voting and crowning ceremony will take place in London this November. Ito ang ipinahayag ng Miss Tourism World Organisation (owner at producer din ng Miss Tourism World, Model of the World, Model of the Universe, and Miss Bikini World) sa kanilang official website na www.misstourismworld.com.

Now on its seventh year, 2006 Bb. Pilipinas-World Carlene Aguilar is the reigning Miss Internet World WWW, having won the title last year.

Other past winners are Miss Kenya (Issabel Karuthiru) who bagged the title in 2005, Miss Lithuania (Dovile Milasiute) in 2004, Miss Lebanon (Dorisse Hajj) in 2003, Miss Russia (Irina Demianova) in 2002, and Miss Colombia (Yeris Paola) who was crowned the first Miss Internet World WWW in 2001.

This year, StarStruck 4 Avenger and GMA Artist talent Stef Prescott will represent the Philippines sa gaganaping Miss Internet World WWW 2007.

Nabanggit ni Stef sa PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) na mula raw sa mahigit 20-plus na pinagpilian ng isang Philippine agent, natutuwa siya dahil siya ang napili to represent our country.

“Actually, napakabigat nga po ng pressure sa akin,” sabi ni Stef. “Kasi ilang days lang tatakbo ang online voting. Anim na araw lang ito at kinakabahan din ako in a way, although mas relax nga ito dahil pipiliin ang mananalo via Internet voting. Walang Q&A portion, no swimsuit competition, at wala ring evening gown. It’s really pure Internet voting.”

Nakatakda nang magsimula ang online voting sa gaganaping Miss Internet World WWW 2007 bukas, November 4 (12:00 GMT, Friday), hanggang November 9 (12:00 GMT, Sunday).

For six days, magkakaroon ng pagkakataon ang mga supporter ni Stef to vote for her. Sakaling palaring pumasok bilang Miss Internet World Asia, awtomatikong lilipad ang dalaga for the grand finals sa London kung saan haharapin niya ang iba pang winners ng Miss Internet World WWW mula sa tatlo pang continents—Africa, Europe, at Americas.

Sa grand finals, the continental winners will then be voted by a panel of judges na siyang pipili ng bagong Miss Internet World WWW 2007 winner.

“Kaya po umaapela ako sa mga tao at sa mga tagahanga ko na iboto nila ako. Sayang naman ang pagiging Internet addict natin kung hindi natin naipapananalo ito,” pakiusap ni Stef, na kasama sa cast ng Sine Novela na My Only Love.

Miss Mexico wins Miss International 2007; Miss Philippines fails to make it in the semi-finals

Si Priscila Perales ng Mexico ang nagwagi sa 47th Miss International Pageant na ginanap sa Tokyo, Japan noong nakaraang Lunes, October 15. Tinalo ni Priscila ang more than 60 beautiful candidates from all over the world. Ang naging runners-up ay sina Miss Greece Despina Vlepaki (1st runner-up) at Miss Belarus Yulia Sindzeyeva (2nd runner up).

Naging semi-finalists sa Miss Universe last year si Priscila kaya naman may experience na siya sa ganitong kalaking beauty pageants. She made history dahil siya ang first Mexican beauty na manalo ng Miss International.

Sadly, ang representative ng Pilipinas na si Nadia Lee Shami failed to make it even in the Top 15 semi-finalists. Ito ang second year na hindi nakaabante ang representative natin since nanalo ang Miss Philippines na si Precious Lara Quigaman noong 2005.

Fist time naman magpadala ng representative ang bansang Belarus at kaagad itong nakapasok at naging 2nd runner-up pa.

Ang iba pang nakapasok sa Top 15 ay ang mga candidates mula sa Chile, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Puerto Rico, Russia, Spain, Turkey, and Venezuela.

Nakakuha naman ng special awards sina Miss Japan Hisako Shirata, Miss Photogenic; Miss Aruba Jonella Oduber, Best In National Costume; at Miss Hong Kong Grace Wong, Miss Friendship.
