NEWS5 team undergoes CNN training with Emmy-winning anchor Jim Clancy

Manila, Philippines—The World’s news leader CNN recently conducted a two-day in-country session, led by veteran correspondent and news anchor Jim Clancy and International Newsource director Eli Flournoy, training the anchors, correspondents and producers of NEWS5, TV5’s news organization. The training maximizes NEWS5’s CNN broadcast partnership which it inked with the international news agency in September 2010.

The CNN-NEWS5 in-country training was focused on lectures and workshops with international scope and scale, while remaining relevant to the local broadcast landscape. According to DJ Sta. Ana, NEWS5 head of news operations, the training is beneficial “in the sense that it helps them [anchors, reporters and producers] improve their skill. It exposes them to them the processes involved in international news organizations so they are able to pick up ideas, best practices and scenarios which they can apply and relate with their own work here,” he said. “And it’s always beneficial to learn from people of experience like Jim Clancy.”

Meanwhile, Ann Chu, executive director of CNN broadcast services and affiliate relations, is optimistic that the training will strengthen the partnership of the two news organizations. “I’m delighted that our newsrooms are able to work even more closely together. CNN has always acknowledged building local relations with journalists as crucial to our shared success.”

The attendees were inspired by the work ethic and very extensive broadcast experience of the multi-awarded Jim Clancy, whose experience across the world’s biggest stories, including in the Middle East and Africa, earned him several recognitions from prestigious award-giving bodies including the Emmy, George Polk and Alfred I.DuPont.

For Erwin Tulfo, anchor of NEWS5’s flagship newscast AKSYON, the in-country training presented greater opportunities for seasoned broadcast journalists and new breeds alike. “I’ve been in this business for quite some time but I still learn a lot of things like new ways, new techniques in covering stories and events. He [CNN’s Jim Clancy] knows a lot of things—from anchoring to covering. He has been at CNN for more than three decades. I learned a lot of things from him. He was very inspirational.” Erwin disclosed, adding that he’s looking forward to improving his “covering, anchoring skills” and probably share it with NEWS5’s junior reporters and new anchors.

Maeanne Los Baños, one of NEWS5’s junior correspondents who attended the two-day training, related that each lecture from the training was very insightful, especially for them who work in the field. “I think the timing is really perfect for us working as correspondents. Specifically, I value the lectures on reporting in a hostile environment and lecture on balanced reporting and ethics,” she related. “I really value his [Jim Clancy] stories about how he actually prepares each day on his work. He still devotes more than two hours for reading newspapers before he goes to work.  That’s something that reminds us of how big our responsibility is as journalist. That we’re not just there to cover we have to sit there each day so that we’ll be able to give the information as complete as we can to the viewers,” she continued.

What do you think of Charice’s new look? Debate among fans explodes online. Lesbian label creates buzz.

With the fresh ink on her left arm, a new hair style and an edgy new look, Charice welcomed her fans and the media for an interview.

Her look is totally different from the Charice we have known all these years.  No more pony tails and cutesy doll dresses.  She has transformed herself with a new look and not many of her fans liked it

Her tattoo and hairstyle sparked debate on whether she is a lesbian or not.  One interviewer apparently asked her the question straight up front and her reply:

“Why would you ask me that question? I think that‘s a very inappropriate question. For me, just love me. I‘m a person. If you think I‘m a boy or a girl or if I look like a boy, then fine. I‘m Charice. I know what people think, I don‘t care. This is the look that I want. The only thing that you can do is move on.”

Without the confirmation nor the denial, the rumors may remain as it had remained about Whitney Houston.  Remember when she was being labeled a lesbian many years ago?

Goodluck with the new look Charice!  Sometimes, drastic changes like that changes people’s opinion about a celebrity.  It’s sad, but it’s the truth.

BOC Commissioner Ruffy Biazon (@ruffybiazon) asked to apologize to foreigners who suffered bribery and extortion in the Philippines on Letterman.

I received a tweet from So, What’s News? telling me about an interview between David Letterman and Philippine Bureau of Customs Chairman, Ruffy Biazon.

Remember the mix-up about Indonesia and the Philippines during Taylor Kitsch’s interview on Letterman where the host indicated that the airport where Taylor was delayed due to bribery was in the Philippines?  It was cleared up during the interview.  David Letterman apologized on behalf of CBS, The Letterman Show, and the United States for the accusation.

“I would like to issue a statement on behalf of my country”, said Biazon. “We, as a nation, pride ourselves on how others perceives us. A single mistake is of serious concern to us because it has a negative effect not only on the image of our Bureau of Customs but the Philippines as a country as well.”

Yet, he introduced foreigners who “actually experienced” bribery and extortion while traveling the Philippines and asked Ruffy Biazon to apologize to them.

It is shameful but true.  Bribery is still a part of  the Filipino culture and will probably remain until the end of time.  If we are quick to request for an apology from someone who accused us of bribery, we must know that we have to work on purging bribery from our country as well.  I’m not saying that bribery does not exist in the modern world.  It does.   But, in order to move our country forward, we should take steps in eliminating it from our culture.

SPOTLIGHT: John Lloyd Cruz – The Most Versatile Leading Man in Philippine Cinema

Forget about Piolo Pascual. Forget about Gerald Anderson. I will go even as far as Aljur Abrenica and my one and only crush, Coco Martin.

Yes, “Walang Hanggan” is still the number one teleserye nationally (and possibly internationally among Filipino households) and Coco Martin deserves it because he is indeed a great actor.

For a moment, let’s talk about versatility and marketability. Who is the most-sought-after Filipino leading man to-date? I would put my money where my mouth is. I would say if I have to invest in a film, and the leading man chosen is John Lloyd Cruz, I will go ALL IN.

Why?

Well, let’s count the ways….

Hayden Kho Jr. and Vicki Belo’s relationship and Al Galang. Who cheated? Who cares?

I don’t really know why anyone cares about the relationship between Hayden Kho, Jr. and Dra. Vicki Belo. I don’t mean to pass any judgement but it’s really their own problem.

We have moral standards but the moral standards we all uphold are our own. It’s not anybody else’s. So if Hayden Kho cheated on Vicki Belo, so be it. That’s their problem. If Dra. Belo was the cheater, who cares?

I found in my experience that people hold us against their standards. I do it it too. I sometimes judge people according to my moral scale and not theirs.

In any case, they have already broken up. If they get back together again – - its still not our issue. As far as Al Galang is concerned – he’s cute and he’s got a successful business at 28-years of age. Why would he even get involved in a scandal… publicity?

Can’t stop watching ABS-CBN’s “Walang Hanggan”?

Okay guys. I have never been addicted to a teleserye and I thought that I could live my life without getting addicted to one but this new series from ABS-CBN has got me hooked.

I have seen the trailers for it and like always, I usually ignore it.

I was in Chicago over the weekend and I was staying with a friend of mine who was watching an episode of “Walang Hanggan” which he had recorded on his DVR. After watching a simple 10 minutes of it, I want to go back and start watching it from the beginning.

With classes, work, and everything else, I really don’t have the time to follow a teleserye but I think I’m going to make an exception on this one.

And by the way, did anyone notice how gorgeous and ageless Dawn Zulueta is?! She looks amazing!!

What programs do you think will work to make Filipinos (who are usually happy anyway) happier? It could take a lot of brainstorming and Caloy is already nervous but filled with excitement with his task to implement programs that would make Filipinos happy.

His first decree as President for Happiness? FREE COKE!!! Here’s the link: Free Coke

The remake of Valiente on TV5 coming this February 2012 (VIDEOS)

Get ready folks!  Replacing Glamorosa in February is the remake of Valiente on TV5!

Click the links below to view the videos.

Nadine Samonte Message

Nina Jose Message

TV5 opens the year with the return of the biggest and the most successful teleserye ever seen on Philippine TV – Valiente. After two decades of unparalleled viewer patronage, Valiente comes back with a grander cast, a more compelling story and impressive production that will hit the primetime scene this February.

Valiente revolves around the remarkable story of two families, Braganza and
Valiente, who whose lives are intertwined in their search for truth and genuine love.  Portraying the iconic roles of this historic dramaserye are the new generation of  Valiente leads: Kapatid stars JC De Vera, Nadine Samonte, Nina Jose and Oyo Sotto.

JC De Vera will play the role of Gardo Valiente, a young but destitute lad who works for Hacienda Braganza and is a loyal friend to Theo Braganza (Oyo Sotto), a rich and stubborn Braganza heir who has special interests in guns. Maila Braganza (Nadine Samonte), the youngest among the Braganza brood, falls in love with Gardo but her scheming sister Leona Braganza (Nina Jose) will do anything to get in the way of Malia and Gardo’s relationship.

Joining the new generation of Valiente cast are the most-respected and highly
acclaimed actors in the industry: Gina Alajar, Jaclyn Jose, Mark Gil, and the original Valiente himself, Michael De Mesa (who is already US-based but has returned to the country specifically to be part of the much-anticipated Valiente comeback).

Watch the biggest and the grandest remake of Valiente, airing soon on TV5 primetime this February.

Piolo Pascual is such a hunk. And so is Carlos Agassi. Both shirtless? (PICS)

No one can deny that Piolo Pascual is sexy.  Carlos Agassi is also sexy.  Both of them do take care of their physique well and I must admit, I have wished that the rumors about Piolo Pascual being gay would be true.   Carlos Agassi did admit that he had a sexual relationship with a gay man while in his teens which lasted for a year.

These photos have been around since last December and I just wonder how Piolo can pose shirtless with another guy knowing all the rumors about him swirling around.  Doesn’t that give more assumptions from the public’s point of view?

I remember a neighbor I had whose body was so perfect.   He would walk his dog around the neighborhood and he would be shirtless.  My female neighbor would always call me when he was walking his dog and scream, “Chuva!!  Look out your window!”.  What straight guy would do that?

I became very good friends with the guy and he’s really a nice guy.  I did have a thought in my mind that he could be gay and that his”brother” who lives with him was really not his brother.  I never had a chance to find out because they moved out.

If you think these photos are bad, take a look at the pic after the jump:

Painful but true – - Philippine’s New Tourism Slogan “More Fun in the Philippines” gets bashed continuously. .

When controversies about the previous Philippine tourism slogan of “Pilipinas Kay Ganda” hit the web about being a copycat, rip-off artists and the like… we all had to admit our fault.  Yes, it really did look like a blatant copy of the Polish tourism logo.  You would think, we would learn from it.  But we didn’t.

Millions of pesos are allocated to the creation, design and research for a new tourism slogan.  Yet, the only thing we can come up with is a copy of someone else’s?  This time, it looks like a rip-off from “It’s more fun in Switzerland!” used in the 50s.   Yup, you heard that right.

So, it was just right for Bisean to bash the hell out of our slogan and logo.  Although, I think that with us, adding verbs before the “…….It’s More Fun in the Philippines” is genius.  But, let’s say that it’s something we really didn’t come up with -  and simply copied from Switzerland -  the additional comments became more personal and was not about the slogan and the logos anymore but rather, the people.  Here are some of the comments:

It’s not just about ripping off fellow Filipino, using photographs without his permission or at least a notice…

It’s not just about using other countries’ images trying to get away with it…
It’s not about millions of tax payer’s money used to reasearch (for what?), campaign, broadcast, print. No, it’s not just about that…
… is Filipino culture. “We are better than…”, “Our country is better than….”. Insinuations.
Is there a Siti Nurhaliza video in YouTube not bashed by Filipino critters? Is there a Miss Indonesia video in YouTube not bashed by Filipinos online? Is there a Thai tourism video on YouTube without any comments — “In the Philippines we have this and that…”? Are there anything, in any forum or platform, not bashed by Filipinos?
It’s more fun in the Philippines “than”….
It’s their culture. I hate to admit but this slogan says a lot about them that WOW Philippines in my previous tourism rant.
I love the Philippines. Old friends of this blog knows it very well. And this post… is a reflection that nobody want to see.
“It’s more fun in the Philippines than YOURS.” It’s their culture. Love it or hate it.

PAINFUL – - – BUT, TRUE.

How sweet!!! Phil Younghusband on Angel Locsin: “Yes, I think she’s the one… Yes!”

Ramgen Revilla and Janelle Mahanan Sex Video Scandal Download

It is appalling to me that someone who recently died will be disrespected in a way that Ramgen Revilla has been treated with the release of the alleged “sex video” of him and then girlfriend Janelle Manahan.   What is more worrisome is that people have been searching the web for it like you would not believe.

When I look at my blog statistics for searches, many users have been led to my blog with searches like “Ramgen Janelle Sex Video Download Link” or”Link to Download Ramgen Revilla and Janelle Manahan Sex Video” or “Youtube Ramgen Revilla Janelle Manahan Naked”.

If you take notice, many blogs which normally are not on the top 10 of TopBlogs.ph, are now on the top 10 with a surge in traffic and that is because of their headlines featuring a download of the video.

It’s a shame – - but I guess that’s how the world rolls.  And no, I don’t have the link and even if I did, out of respect – I will not provide it.

Vice Ganda vs. Ai-Ai delas Alas. The “snubbing” issue raised by many. Who’s telling the truth?

Did any of you see Vice Ganda‘s interview with Boy Abunda on The Buzz last Sunday?

I was still at home sick and I had the show on DVR so I watched it last night. I have always liked Vice Ganda and I believe that he really as a good heart. Boy Abunda’s questions allowed Vice to show his personal side. What was most touching was about Vice’s grandmother Lola Rosita whom the actor/host/performer referred to as “not doing very well” at the time of the interview. (His grandmother passed away on New Year’s Day 2012 – the show was taped days before that).

On the interview, the actor was teary-eyed when spoke the words below:

Vice was also questioned about the “snubbing” issue that happened between him and Ms. Ai-Ai delas Alas. I think that his response was well thought out and delivered properly. He admitted that indeed, Ms. Ai-Ai and Vice are going through something and that is the reason why they didn’t acknowledge each other when they were caught snubbing each other at The Manila Peninsula on Christmas day. When asked about the explosive article written by PhilStar Editor Ricky Lo, he simply responded that we cannot judge people specially if we don’t know exactly what is going on between the people involved. Very true, I must say!

Vice then apologized to his fans and other people who were offended by the report. He also stated that he misses the old days when he wasn’t as famous because when you are catapulted to stardom, you are expected to act in a way that they expect you to act. Any deviation from it results in controversies. When asked which life he would choose if given the chance to choose between his famous persona versus the non-famous Vice? He said he will choose the latter because “back then, life was simpler”.

Wow! I think that’s a very honest response.

I wish both Ai-Ai and Vice can mend their differences and move on…. they’re both highly-talented and I would like to see them both in a movie someday…

Gunshot to the head killed Star Struck hunk Tyron Perez. Suicide suspected, not ruling out foul play just yet.

Tyron Perez , a young and very promising actor was found dead in the backseat inside his car, a Toyota Altis Sedan Thursday night in Valenzuela.  He had a gunshot wound to the head, said to be from a .22 caliber firearm.   The gun was found right beside him and they are suspecting an apparent suicide but officials are still investigating for foul play.

Perez, 26 was a contestant from the reality talent show StartStruck 1 back in 2003.  He landed a role on “Mula sa Puso” and was recently in a very popular drama show “MMK (Maala-ala Mo Kaya)” which aired on December 3rd.  He also landed the lead role for a 2006 film, Twilight Dancers.

Police said that a friend of Perez, Alvin Salazar had mentioned to his wife earlier that day that he may be committing suicide but nothing out of the ordinary was observed from the actor’s demeanor during his last few days.  The actor’s apparent suicide may have been related to gambling debts according to Salazar.    They said that Perez was even forced to sell his wife’s car to pay off gambling debts.

His friends and batchmates from the reality talent show like Mark Herras, Jennylyn Mercado, Yasmien Kurdi, Cristine Reyes, Dion Ignacio, Nadine Samonte and Rainer Castillo were shocked when they heard the news of his passing.

Another StarStruck discovery, Marky Cielo died in December of 2008.  He is also the second actor with the family name of Perez who passed away this year, with AJ Perez‘s passing involving a car crash.

A photo of the actor lying in state appeared online Friday morning as shown below:
