I remember the first season of the SERIAL podcast about Adnan Syed who was accused and convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend and an investigation of the facts surrounding his conviction. I was addicted to that podcast that I waited patiently week-after-week for the next episode. The podcast was record-breaking as it is the only podcast that has reached such gigantic following. The podcast caused the Maryland justice system to re-open Adnan Syed’s case for a retrial.
As fascinating as the first SERIAL podcasts were, I am equally intrigued with the 2nd season focused on Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. His capture was high-profile and his rescue even more. The question arose later on when Wikileaks released classified documents that indicated Bowe Bergdahl voluntarily left his post. The search for Bowe Bergdahl cost six lives as they were killed by Taliban fighters during the week-long search.
As an American, would you be glad that Sgt. Bergdahl was rescued or will you be as mad as his platoon members when they found out that he voluntarily left his post and was seeking to communicate with the Taliban?
I am questioning myself now too but then again, his reason for why he did what he did is also something to think about. I think you all need to follow this series so we can talk about. Do you think he should be spared from punishment or should he suffer the consequences of what he did?
